When does the UK thoroughbred foaling season start? In the southern hemisphere it's September through to December/January but what about here?

The covering season runs from 15th February to 15th July each year.

The foaling season is anytime from 1st January onwards.

A northern hemisphere thoroughbred's official birthday is 1st January, so the earlier a foal is born, the bigger advantage it will have when reaching racing age.

However, if a foal is born before 1st January (either because it is premature or because the mare was covered too early) it will still become 1 year old on 1st January, regardless of the fact that it is only a few days old.

There was a case of this a few years ago involving a horse called ENDLESS SUMMER, read the following article to find out more:

"Juddmonte `juvenile' was three when he won Group 2
Former Khalid Abdullah colt at centre of Jockey Club investigation
Published: 01/07/2004 (News) GRAHAM GREEN
ONE of the world's most successful racing and breeding operations is to be at the centre of a Jockey Club investigation into serious allegations over the correct age of a top-class racehorse owned and bred by Prince Khalid Abdullah.
It follows an allegation and subsequent admission that Endless Summer was not aged two but was officially a three-year-old when landing the Group 2 Richmond Stakes for trainer John
Gosden at Goodwood in 2000.
In four outings that season, the colt, who made a winning debut at Newbury, went on to confirm his status among the cream of the two-year-old crop by
finishing runner-up in two Group 1s, the Prix Morny at Deauville and the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.
However, information passed to the Portman Square authorities yesterday alleges the son of Zafonic was foaled on December 26, 1997, and not January 2, 1998, as registered on his passport. There is no suggestion Abdullah or
Gosden knew of the circumstances of the colt's birth.
As the Rules of Racing state that "the age of a horse shall be reckoned as
beginning on January 1 in the year in which it was foaled", if this startling claim is confirmed by investigators, Endless Summer would face the prospect of disqualification from the races he contested as a juvenile, along with a possible loss of prize-money.
This would be acutely embarrassing for Abdullah, an honorary member of the Jockey Club, who has enjoyed phenomenal global success with his home-bred horses since 1980, when he became the first Arab to win a British Classic with Known Fact in the 2,000 Guineas.
It is alleged that Endless Summer was nicknamed the `secret squirrel' by staff at Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms
because, following the premature foaling, both he and his dam, Well Away, were kept clear of prying eyes during the day in an indoor school rather than
being turned out in the paddock. They only returned to the foaling unit at night.
A former Juddmonte Farms employee had planned to blow the whistle on Endless Summer's foaling and over-age racing at an employment tribunal in Reading on Monday but, although a
last-minute out-of-court settlement
involving confidentiality agreements meant the case was never heard, a witness statement from another party highlighted the controversy.
This details the names of the two
employees alleged to have foaled
Endless Summer and has been passed to the Jockey Club, which has also been given the name of the vet it is claimed inoculated the foal at the stud on
December 27, 1997.
Jockey Club spokesman John Maxse said last night: "It is a serious allegation, which warrants an investigation to try to establish the facts.
"Philip Mitchell [Juddmonte Farms manager] contacted us today and
informed us that Endless Summer had in fact been foaled before January 1, 1998. They [Juddmonte Farms] have promised full co-operation with our inquiry into the matter. The Rules of Racing do allow for retrospective action in the event of a horse being found to have been the subject of fraudulent practice.
"Juddmonte have said they will give the Jockey Club a written statement."
Endless Summer did not race in 2001 and, after finishing third in two claimers at Hollywood Park the following summer, was bought by Terry Holdcroft to stand at his stud in Shropshire.
Holdcroft admitted the horse's credentials as a Group winner had been reflected in the price agreed with Abdullah.
Endless Summer subsequently proved infertile and was sold to Kevin Ryan, for whom he raced six times last year.
This term, he moved from Ryan to Karl Burke before having his first run for Tony Carroll when sixth of nine in a handicap at Warwick last Sunday.
Since resuming his racing career in Britain, Endless Summer is not thought to have run in any races in which age was a qualifying factor."

Breeding is for making babies.....and maximum animals have a cycle that they call "entering estrus", this might properly be a fragrance that the male animals scent that's positioned out by ability of the female to enable them to appreciate that the are waiting (in estrus)...... that's whilst they arrive into the time whilst their waiting for having babies, animals won't be able to have babies at any time, they have purely a quick time each and every 3 hundred and sixty 5 days whilst they ( come into season ) , that's what maximum breeders call it whilst animals can become pregnant. Animals are in comparison to human beings they only have particular cases whilst they might become pregnant !!!!!!!!!!!

just about anytime as they have the equine fertility drugs to get the horse to ovulate within a few hours of when they have the stud ready to cover. With Storm Cat commanding 500k per live foal, the girls are lined up and waiting, giving the teaser ponies plenty of work (sucks to be the teaser)
