I pity you. It is curse that the men of art should starve despite their contribution to the society, in art and aesthetics. In olden days, the royalty, maintained them. Now, they have to fend for themselves. However, many artists do thrive and their paintings etc. fetch them a good sum of money. You need to the right knack to market your wares. Perhaps you have a talk with some one who is doing very well in painting and marketing. May be you have to organise an exhibition of your paintings. Many guys are prepared to buy good paintings. If you cannot afford to organised your own show, you find a sponsor for yourself. In Chennai, in Poonamalee high road, near the Central Railway Station, there is a Government run college for fine arts and i am told that many of the students who come out of the college are able to sell their products to a good sum. May be you can meet them and find out about the ways to find buyers for your products.

Try some or all of the following:
1. Take it to a galery yourself
2. Have someone take it to a gallery - sometimes we, the artists, are not good salespersons. This can also give an impression that you are hard to find.
3. Talk to small business owners - here where I live, some small shops (mostly coffee shops) decorate with local artists and have the pricing on a little corner.
4. Take your work to tourist gift shops - some people from abroad may apreciate your work more than locals.
5. Make sure your priced right
6. Try EBAY! It works..
7. Make up your own website.
8. Pray
9. Good luck!

I was in the same position you were. It was hard for me to get my pieces into a local art gallery. The thing that worked for me the most was going to high schools and putting some pieces up there then I would also take my pieces to the local museum and host them there. It's a lot of footwork to do yourself but it's worth it because you get to be known throughout your city then!!
