Canon and Nikon 18-55's and Sony's 18-70 are plastic mounted POS's
Pentax's 18-55 or Olympus 14-45 have metal mounts and are built better.
If you go for nikon look at Nikor 18-70 instead of basic kit lens

With their pro cameras, they don't even bother offering a kit lens. Pros know exactly what they want and they fart in the general direction of kit lenses.
With the mid-range models, Nikon offers a good 18-70mm and a so-so 18-135mm. Canon offers a good 17-85mm zoom.
With the entry level cameras, both brands offer an 18-55mm lens that sucks. It's pointless to discuss which one is better, their main attraction is that they stop dust from hitting the sensor. I mean, they're not bad for the price, but for $140 sold separately (both of them), you can't expect a quality zoom lens from ANY brand.

The new Nikon 18-135 and 18-200VR are great lenses with a zoom range Canon does not even come close to matching.

That's a tough question to answer. Each manufacturer has different quality lens lines. Even if you took the best line of each, lens of the one focal length might be best from one company and other lens would be better from the other company. There is no "best" across the board. You have to comparing specific lens and grades of lens - apples to apples.
Most "kit" lens are consumer grade. If you want the best lens from either manufacturer, buy the body and lens separately.
