many standard issue, diesel-powered, small-ish cars, such as the VW Polo, average 3 to 3.5 liters per 100km.

That's 67 to 78 mpg.

That beats all the hybrid bullshit by far. That beats suggesting any large car (what a poor reasoning).

As for hydrogen powered cars, well. You've got to extract the hydrogen first, and the technology used for this today is energy hungry, so over the full cycle fuel production plus fuel burning in the car, this is far from looking good.
