I will be visiting HKG with my wife from the 20-25 Oct '06. Although most of the Hotels I have checked online are full, the ones that have rooms are overly priced (USD 200 approx). Can anyone help me to find a Hotel within or around USD100 per nite in the Kowloon area? Or is it a good idea if I just land up there and ask the taxi guy to take me to a decent Hotel, will i get cheated?

I'm speaking just on the basis of my experience visiting HK several times on my way to China.

First, Kowloon is quite a ways away from the airport. Your best bet is to catch a bus (downstairs, outside, info can show the way) for around 3 or 4 dollars (US) and takes about an hour to get to Kowloon. You could also take the underground train if that's your preference. Taking a taxi might be at least 200 HKD.

Second, if you are willing to stay anywhere and not just Kowloon, you could check the nearby hotels for your first night, several of which are nearby and are budget hotels (but decent) with free transit by bus to them. If you MUST get to Kowloon, then take the bus as per above.

Third, if you get in a taxi and ask (in what language, pray tell) to take you to a cheap hotel, you'll get taken to the Mariott by the longest and most circuitous route possible. Forget it. Tricking the foreigner is a sport around these parts.

Fourth, check the source for possible hotels in the Kowloon area. If all else fails, go to the Dragon Hostel (do a search for its website, reservations allowed, US educated manager) about 20 dollars US a night.

r u on ur way going to somewhere?
if not, change ur plan.
if i m not wrong, there is a Canton Trade Fair in Guangzhou. start from the second week of Oct, till end of the month. Although the fair is not as good as years back, BUT, its still attracts lots of business ppl to visit there AFTER or BEFORE they stopover in Hong Kong...so most hotels r full...tats the reason.

AND, u must book a hotel b4 u leave home. DON"T just hop in a taxi at the airport and ask for assistant like wat u said. they may end up send u to a mansion full of illegal workers OR those very expensive hotels.

nowadays travel by underground train is getting more convenient. u may have to choose hotel abit far from Kowloon, then travel to town by train/bus. spend less on accomodations , but a bit more on transportations. but u can see more of HK's life (if u prefer)

i had stayed in Novotel Gateway Hotel once. its nice. newly open. very near to airport(same island as the airport). there is a shopping centre next to it and the MTR(underground train) station too. very convenient.
(i m not working for the hotel)

goodluck.

Sham Rock hotel... on Nathan Road. Tsim Tsa Tsui. But you should make booking long in-advance around Early April or/else you will be difficult to get Rooms.
