Hey Jen

My first shift ever behind a bar was on New Years Eve on year and as you can imagine it was absolutly hectic! However, I managed fairly well and it was the best way I think to be broken in. Most drinks are on Draft or optics in most places so that makes things very easy. And as for the memorizing the drinks when they have been ordered if you are unsure you will be able to put them on the till and you can always check back through the order.

Soon you will remember the regulars who come into your pub and what they drink. Confidence is the key!!

From 22 years of working with bartenders, you probably will mess up a bit to start, but be nice to the other staff and they will help you. Servers can tell what goes in most drinks. Even customers can tell you sometimes, remember to smile and laugh a lot. Don't take yourself, the flattery or the insults too seriously, and it can work.

A bartender can be the best thing if you want to have fun and the thing is you are always going to forget drinks. Best thing is though is that you will end up getting a very good memory and it all starts to come naturally so go for it and have fun!!!

Customers will always expect new barmaids to mess up a little so dont stress. I've been a barmaid 4 years now and i love it! Every shift is different and i've meet a lot of great people.

The biggest thing to remember is your in the business of getting people drunk and drunk people can say and do nasty things. Take it all with a pinch of salt because 9 time out of 10 they will apologise when they are sober. You have the power to stop people drinking and they know it so use it to your advantage but dont be cocky.

Always smile.

bartending is not knowing all the drinks its knowing the people you serve drinks to.my family thought i was crazy to want to be a bartender. but i work at a bar , thats low in quantity, but high in quality. so i sell my conversation. i make 30% tips on all my sales, but i sell a beer for 3$ and i get a 2$ tip. the tip for you is sell yourself not the product
