Would you want to see your belly being cut open, a hand shoved into your belly and then pulling a baby out?! I know I don't!!

because when you are having the operation, you need to keep a sterile area so you wont get infection in your opened abdominal area, and also because you cant feel anything with the spinal anaesthetic they give you, the mother might freak out when she sees the doctor cut her open and then cut the uterus to get the child out, there is usually a lot of amniotic fluid gushing out along with the baby, and sometimes the baby is blue, and needs resuscitation before the mother gets to hold her baby..
some dads faint in the operating theater when they see what is happening to their wives..
and maybe the doctors don't want litigation

For two reasons: To keep it sterile (since the lady doesn't scrub in like the docs do), and to keep her from freaking out if she saw her belly being sliced open.
I had a c-section in February, and I asked them to lower the curtain so I could see my son being born, and they did. I would've watched, if I could, and I would have loved to have a video of it, but we didn't ask if we could film it. I forgot to, in the excitement of getting ready.

The drape is used to protect the sterile environment that the physician has created after all a c-section is considered major abdominal surgery and we don't want people getting unnecessary infections by careless behavior.

When I had mine, they had trouble getting the baby out, it was taking forever, but no one would tell me what was going on so I tried to lift the sheet and they yelled at me. It turns out, they had broken the vacuum in two and the suction part was stuck to my son's head! I was also losing so much blood that I almost had to have a transfusion. So, I guess there are some things they just don't want us to see so we don't freak out. But, "all's well that ends well".

Kudos Julie M.
I would not have wanted to watch that either, but obviously the sterile surgical environment is the priority here. This is surgery, not natural labor.
