peachie: then disregard my question, it is aimed at the christians who do believe that atheists are atheists because they want to "sin" aka commit immoral acts. I do apoligize if I offended you, but I know christians who think like that, and you most likely know some who also think like that

Bad bhuddist,
I am not an atheist for attention, off the internet i keep it to myself because people will treat me different if they knew of my beliefs.

Yoda, you don't realize the motivation of this question. I don't care about prisoners, I just don't appreciate the stigma that comes with being an atheist in a country that is mostly christian.
I am just enjoying my free time before going to sleep, by giving questions to spark peoples' brains to think. You need to get a life, if you had one maybe you would be more wise, like the Yoda off of Star Wars.

Oh yeah, they do get out sooner if they profess to be a christian, doesn't that just show you how being nonreligious is viewed negatively even by officials?

I (a Christian) never once have said that Atheists are immoral. Granted, some are.
So mutual respect would be appreciated here, please, and thank you.
To answer your question, because they committed crimes. Whoever is a Christian, and claims to be perfect, isn't much of a Christian, and thankfully, I have never heard a Christian say that they were.

Well, according to ARIS, about 13% of the US population was non-religious, .4% were agnostic and .5% were atheist, so one would normally assume that around 14% of the prison population should be represented by non-religious people, but this isn't the case.
My politically incorrect guess would be that since blacks make up the majority of the prison population, and black atheists are a minority within a minority, one need only do the math to see that you are going to have very few atheists in prison.

Who said atheists are immoral?
Anyone in prison for a real crime can't be religous or a Christian, otherwise they shouldn't be there.
They are there because they steal or kill or cheat or lie. None of those characteristics are religous.
All prisoners are ultimate Atheists, because they believe in nothing. There is no God, No Heaven, They're already in Hell, There are No Rules, it is just about THEM and THEY are all that counts. Their only religion is they view themselves as GOD, who can do whatever he wants.
Therefore all criminals have to be Atheists, for they have no faith, no religion, no belief system, no God.
They are the ultimate Atheists. The universe revolves around them and no one else counts.
Anyone who has faith in another person or thing is religious. It's automatic. You admit that SOMEONE or SOMETHING in the universe is MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU ARE and you make yourself subserviant.
In order for you to be an Atheist you can't be subserviant. You can't worship something or someone. You can't have faith of any kind, otherwise you are a theist of one kind or another.

Because the Christians have an active ministry going on at the prisons that keep converting law breakers to Christianity. Teams of evangelists go in every week and share the Word of God on their own time, for no pay or gratitude. And that is why the prison populations are on the increase of Christianity.
And as to your second statement, yes, we are. But atheists aren't evil unless you are claiming that title for yourself.
If you had done a little investigating you would have discovered this yourself and not made such a lame statement.

While those statistics may be demonstrable, you haven't calculated the conversion rate of prison life. They weren't before prison and won't be after they get out, but while in there are trying to make brownie points by being "christian".
And who knows how sincere they are while regurgitating the jargon while in jail? There is probably no way to measure that.
Religion is the opiate of the masses. Don't take it away from them. It is what keeps the poor from eating the rich.

Honestly i don't think atheists are immoral or evil. I'm not, but I have friends and family that are. Neither am I a Christian. Religion is your own personal choice. You are what you are and you should be proud of it. Ignore what other people say. After all, your opinion is the only one that counts. Right?

You must lead a very boring existence ,,,,, You need to grow up and get a life,,,,,,, Yoda said that

I'm agnostic but if you consider the ratio for how many more christians compared to atheists there are in the united states then it kinda makes sense in fact there should be more christians in jail because USA is I believe 89% christian

Just because someone *says* they are a Christian it obviously does not mean they *act* as a Christian.
Most people are mainly interested in a label. Kind of like you thinking that since you are an atheist that that has some kind of 'meaning'.

There was a Richard Dawkins interview this morning on NPR where he cites that the more educated and intellectual you are, the more likely that you are less inclined to believe in some godlike being.
This has nothing to do with your question, but I thought I would put it out there. As for the reference, I remember Newsweek making that claim last year in one of their religion issues.
