Secretariat. Miss Tweedy won him on a coin toss with Ogden Phipps. The first name submitted to the Jockey Club was Via Dalente(latin, for God Willing ) it has been a long tine since Catholic school, so exact Latin spelling might be slightly off, but if accepted Sec would have been God Willing. Three more submitions also regected, drwing on Bold Ruler's pedigree, finally Secretariat submitted. In the 70's the highest Communist party office was the secretary (sectetariat ) of the U.S.S.R., ironic the only non "person" ever to appear on the cover of Time was Secretariat, Super Horse as he was billed. And at close to the height of the Cold War , Secretariat was the coverboy of our priemer news magazine, Miss Tweedy was not so far off in requesting God Willing.

For 'serious' names I really like the Phipps family choices - especially their mare Pure Profit. She produced foals with names like Inside Information, Educated Risk and Hidden Reserve. They produced foals named Strategy, Philanthropist, Scheming and Smuggler.

But for fun names I like Peter Pan Stable (harness racers). All their horses have "Pan" in the cleverly in the name - Keep Your Pans Off, Onenightinpangkok, The Pana Sutra, The Icepan Cometh, No Pan Intended, Vincent Pan Gogh, Whambamthankyoupan, The Firepan, etc.

I live in the Saratoga NY region. A few years back there was a horse named Dum De Dum De Dum and raced in the same race as a horse named DON DON DON DON and another named DO WAKKA DO WAKKA DO I kid you not. But race annoncer Marshall Cassidy pulled it of without a hitch. Although he gave a loud sye after the race to everyones delight. True story.

My choice is Man O'War. I've been to Lexington several times, and practically everything is named after Man O'War. The main strip is called Man O'War Blvd. Sunday Silence was another powerful name but sadly, Sunday died of laminitis.
