Look in the Scripture:

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

To love someone means to care more about them than about yourself.

Most confuse lust for love!
There are two ways of life: Give & Get
Get is the way of "self" "what I want"
Give is the way of God which is love.
Love is out going concern for others & of course the love of God is greater than the love of mankind!
Examples: One who would die for a friend or there nation is a selfish love because they wouldn't die for someone of an enemy nation!
Jesus died for all no matter where they're from or their skin color from the most rich the least poor.
So to truly love another person means you would give your all for them without expecting anything in return.
Love doesn't mean you give them what they want but what is right, even if it means they will hate you. Remember Jesus was hated & still is by many but in the end those who hate Him now will love Him even more!

To truly love another person is to love the way God loves us.

To love in spite of faults and not because of something they do for us. To love them by faith even why they don't love us back.

A good definition of love the way it should be is in the bible in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13

1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

When you truly love someone, you want the best for them, when something great happens in their lives, you are happy for them, when you don't see eye to eye, you discuss/talk/communicate with them, and if after all that you still don't see eye to eye, you disagree agreeable, you don't scream at them because they are not agreeing with every little thing you think is right in your eyes. You pray for them, keep your promises, don't lie to them nor keep "family" secrets. If we really loved with the Love of Christ and followed his example, the world would not feel the need to say, "So much for Christianity".

You love them equally to yourself and you place them above all others, (just like you do for yourself).

When they are hurting, it hurts you just as much.

You feel like you are not whole without them or apart from them.

This is true love and not a lot of people ever find this.

That you are willing to do anything to protect that person even at the cost of your own life.

To love them more than yourself, to be willing to die for them. To hurt when they are hurting and to feel completely hopeless without them.
