If you have a "point and shoot" camera, yes, white balance can help under some kinds of lighting conditions. This is quite true under indoors incandescent lighting to minimize the yellow cast. My Pentax DSLR has many other settings too, but most of the time I can just set it on "Auto" and click away. When I am doing serious work (quite often that is macro work) then all those bells and whistles are a blessing to have.
