We should have security in schools - in other words - a person appointed to check ID's when people come in. and locked facility. We don't leave our homes unlocked all the time with our children in them. I've had people poke their heads into my apt. by mistake, luckily they didn't come to do harm. But with our children today, we can't be too careful. No one should be able to bust into a school and do harm. Lock the doors, have a security guard checking ID's. Granted this won't help 100% but may make someone think twice. More cameras in schools would help as well. Lots of places are surveilled, stores, casinos, banks, why not our schools?

And when will parents learn to lock up the guns in a metal gun safe and also store that ammo safely in another place. Too many teens are gaining access to guns. Parents, wake up!

This is a hot question in our country! Some say teachers should not be the ones protecting our children, some say teachers should be armed. If I were a teacher, I would hope that someone on the campus had, at the very least, a stun gun. Panic buttons might be a good idea in every class room, teaching the students themselves how to rush a gunman should such a person show up in the class room, teaching students to have "eagle" eyes for any unusual presence on their campus, have classes on turning in any kind of "violent" talk regardless how harmless it seems. I would not allow students to wear camouflage attire nor large and long bulky coats. I'd also like to see the fathers, brothers, and uncles band together and drop in on the classes to make their presence known.

in most urban high schools they have a large security force, metal detectors, and the all the over aggressive guards you can want. in my old high school they would lock all but two doors 30 Minutes after school started, guards would patrol the hallways and i guess you can say make their presence known. with all this, i still managed to get held at knife point for a god damn gameboy, and by golly kids were still having sex in the stair well. school violence isn't something new, and all the guards wont be able to stop it, because when the shots start flying they will start running as well. plus do you really want armed personnel walking around a school where they can be taken out from behind with a chemistry book and have their gun taken by some kid who wasn't hugged enough?

I don't see any more violence in schools--than 30 years ago, I see more news coverage of it.

Unfortunately, it has come to a point where schools are applying for and receiving grants for ---School Resource Officers.

Why?
because the schools are "NOT" taking their responsibilities seriously. They are pushing disciplinary responsibilities on police instead of where it belongs-- in the school .

When we send our children to school...
Is the school not classified as "loco parentis"?

Should'nt they be assuming the role of parent while our children are there??No, instead they call the cops to give two ten year olds a disorderly conduct ticket for fighting instead of paddling their azzzes!

don't get me started----I'm afraid I have some very strong opinions on schools dumping their responsibilities on the police.

This whole "amish school killings" "columbine" etc...is bs. I think the reason why these incidents are being broadcast as major problems (which they really aren't...your kid is more likely to likely to be shot walking down the street with you in broad daylight than to be killed at school). The main reason is that they WANT more security in schools to get kids used to seeing security everywhere so that they accept it as normal when they grow up and see "homeland security" everywhere (at school, in the subway, at the airport, in the train, on the street corners with machine guns, etc) , protecting them by patting them down and checking their wallet and pockets. The next generation will have no problem submitting to a police state if they are already used to it.

Most schools already have an armed police officer present for at least part of the day.

Police visibility is needed in schools to prevent violence.

We've had armed police officers on school campuses for YEARS in California. Metal detectors, too.

I really do not believe that schools are any more violent in recent years. I think that we are all more aware of the few occurances due to the media attention.

Claus, I hope that you are referring to the illegal availability of guns............ but that is a whole other topic!

AlfaWolfette, great idea, I like it!

It seems that way with the recent events, doesn't it?

Sad to think this is the shape of things to come.
