A report came out on Yahoo and the army recruiting website also shows how Army bootcamp is getting easier. Drill Sergeants don't yell at recruits anymore. Do you guys think this is the proper way to train our troops when their is a war going on. How diciplined will the troops get with no yelling?

The report from yahoo may be found at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061010/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/nice_drill_sergeants

My hubby is currently a Drill Sergeant for BCT at the exact same place he did his BCT at 18 years ago. So much has changed it's not funny. However, the Drill's have no say in the training. How they act and treat the recruits comes from as high up as you can go. It's true you can't yell or cuss at them any more. You also can't call them girls or sissies or any of the other terms used to motivate them.

He's not allowed to give his opinion, but I'll tell you mine. I think we're putting out lower quality soldiers. They know that they're catered too. Yes, it still changes them, but not the way it used to. There's alot less respect than there used to be. I can tell you from watching graduation day, there's no respect for the uniform. The wives and girlfriends jump up in the soldiers arms. When he joined, you had to sneak a kiss and never held hands. Oh, I realize this is old fashioned to many now. However, back in the day, it was respect....pure and simple. As soon as they graduate, they grab their cell phones and go to the PX to pick up a DVD player and all kinds of goodies. Even AIT wasn't that easy when he went through. It's not "easy" by any means. These Drill's still work the recruits and do whatever they can to keep them alive. However, their hands are tied.

Another huge change is rank. You get promoted way too early now. I'm sorry, but no 23 year old is capable of performing as a E-6 or E-7 with only 4 years in service. You used to have to earn rank....it came with time and experience. I remember my soldier wanted promotions so bad. He ended up in a unit that was in the field all the time. He couldn't go to college, didn't have time for correspondence courses. In a year, his points didn't change at all, nor was there a drop for him to get promoted.

This is just one "old" Army wife opinion. Sorry to say, but I miss those times. We're both ready for retirement and to see what else is out there.

EDIT: To the reply directly under mine....they do NOT get to smoke and drink in Army BCT. They aren't even allowed to have Tylonal in their possession. I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true. The stress cards don't exist any more either. They lasted for a very short time and were a total waste. It shouldn't have even been attempted. However, there are reports that the barracks at, I believe, Ft. Jackson have music now. They pipe it in. Even that, I'm not sure is true. However, I do know there is NO drinking, smoking or stress cards!!

Army boot camp is about remoulding people to think and act in a certain way. If this is not done they will end up dead. If the US gov want all there recruits dead then they will follow up on this and have a army of sissys. Sorry but discipline and the ability to work and act under all conditions is important. I had my butt kicked and thank you drill seargant I am alive.

Hon, first of all you can't make a man your reason for life or your whole meaning to life. When you love him, it feels like he is all you need. But, if he is in the armed services he will be away from you now and then. I would suggest you learn to take care of yourself and not focus on him so much. Get some hobbies, exercise, get out and make some friendships. Work. Get a good education. As you age you will realize that you need to be the best you to be able to love those around you. Your man will come out of boot came a very strong man. He will need you to be strong and loving. He will be traveling and be sent over seas off and on. If you love him you will not be bitchy because he is gone. You will need to make him happy to come home to you. If you can't deal with him being gone then you need to find a man who will stay put. If you love him you will learn to deal the best you can when he is gone. And you will create a good life for him to be in when he is stationed in a place you can be with him and he can go away with strength knowing you will be there waiting for him with a loving life. Many in the service get divorced becasue they can't deal with the time apart. I believe if couples make the decision to make the relasionship work while apart, they have a good chance to have a good happy long term relationship. It will take a great deal of dedication and trust from you to live this life with him. You have the choice The time might seem endless right now. but when it is done you will be thrilled to have such a fne man in your life. And you are possibly are the woman who will be his soft place to fall when he is in the country. God Bless you

I was in Basic Training at Ft. Jackson S.C. in 1991, and by no means was it easy. I have heard over the last couple of years that it was getting easier. I don't know how they are going to train soldiers and expect them to listen, obey and get any respect when they are making it easier and easier. I think it has almost turned into a joke. Very, very sad. Even my AIT on Ft. Jackson was hard and we got yelled at daily.

The article did say it gets more attention from the recruits using this approach....

While yelling and stuff like that worked, doesnt mean this method wont work without trying.

i dont think they will be ready for anything at all. the whole point on the yelling to so push you to the breaking point and to see how you handel the added stress. the only reason they have to stop yelling at them is because people are getting soft. you start yelling at a teenager today and they might start crying. we as when i went to basic they were always in everyones face

Verbal abuse doesn't necessarily make for more disciplined soldiers. If you can get the message to the recruit that what they are doing is serious business, a worthy soldier won't need a whipcracker to get them to perform thier duties.

thats noth the worst part they can smoke and drink in training now and they have these stress cards where the DS cant bother for a few minutes if they are too stressed. this recently changed because it wasnt that way when i was there in 2004.

As in Israel we should make every person who when they get to 18 years of age. go to boot camp. train them. then let them go. it should be tough, but not brutal.
