There's two answers for this question that are typically given, neither of which has a shred of scientific basis to back them up, but there ya are.

The first invokes the ancient idea that nothing more perfect can come from something less perfect. Thus, each generation is (at best) as good as the one before, and usually instead it's worse. From this view, morals have been slowly degrading over time, lifespans have been slowly degrading, health has been slowly degrading, and even the genes are somehow all going bad. So modern man, compared to Adam, is weak, short-lived, immoral, and prone to numerous diseases that simply never bothered him before. And our successors will presumably be even more pathetic.

The other pseudo-scientific answer given is that before the great flood, all the water that was used to flood the earth was somewhere, and where it was was out in the upper atmosphere. Oceans full of water out there blocked out harmful radiation from the sun, which now come through easily. Or maybe they protected the food so it was more nourishing then than now. Thus is was common to live a thousand years or more before the flood, but after the flood the life expectancy was lowered to the current piffling levels. You may note that people are seldom cited as living long after the flood... though it may be a coincidence, some people think not.

We obviously can 'undo' whatever was done - even those who live in ways that simulate those that are thousands of years old don't live longer (and ofttimes live shorter instead). So maybe it's just that people living longer before was a miracle. Whatever you're comfortable with.

Being closer to the time of creation, less abnormalities had crept into our genetic code. It finally bottomed out, about 100 years ago. The generation born as of 1902, has been the first generation in over 1000 years to live, as a whole, longer than 46 years. There was no difference in how they measured time from us, with the exception they use a lunar calendar.

Scientists say that it is a result of the Spanish Flu (so named because only the Spanish media reported on it) epidemic, which targeted mostly the young and healthy, rather than the old and affirmed. Half of all deceased solders in WWI, died on the ship heading there, of the flu.

Of significance, this generation is the one that was of the age of understanding, as the time when the signs of the last days and the second presence of Christ began being fulfilled. That generation is not suppose to pass away before all the signs are fulfilled. They are now past 100 years of age, and are dying off quickly.

some people consider that the time "back then" was simply exaggeration and not really living that long...

I think those who do believe it directly, or see it as more metaphorical of "vastly longer than we normally see the life span to be" have the rationale that that early in human history, the genome was more perfect, on the idea that over time, it decays through inscest, genetically un-ideal matings, ect...

and that now, medically and scientifically, and through better health, ect, we are able to counteract some of that decay to a degree.

In biblical times, people lived to the same ages they do now. It is just that in translating the bible, somebody confused 'years' with 'months' and no one caught it until it had been published so many times that it would have been embarrassing to admit the error. 900 months works out to 75 years, which is much more likely to be a remarkable old age to be mentioned in a folk tale.

People live longer due to they were the chosen ones to populate the world and as population grew so did there death go down in years. God wanted the blood of the first created to continue.
And raise there children in the laws.
Also the food they eat was pure, it had no chemical to take away of its value to and no telling what they eat. And what the animals ate. It was high bread stuff.

There was a cataclism that caused a Genetic change, or it was done by intelligent alteration anyway there actually is a changable genetic code that starts the process of dying. In at least one small life form that code was changed, and the last I heard it was still alive in Texas at the university there.

First off 400 years to them could be 50 years to us now. Not sure what time table they were using back then.

As for 40 being old and now we live to 100 its good modern medicine and understanding our bodies and listening and living healthier lives.

As least that's my two cents.

Someone already asked that question. it has to do with men's free will and environment. We have more to worry about, more stress, less faith, no direct contact with God Himself as much as Adam, Abraham and David had it. We have the Holy Spirit today, but life is not simple anymore because of technology. It is supposed to simplify it, but is more chaotic and stressful. Can you imagine, Adam or Abraham, Moses or David living in current times?
