If you know some of the information, you can go to usgenweb.org. It is a genealogy website that is free. But you will have to do the research yourself. They have lots of information there. If they don't have enough info for you, try CyndisList.com. It is another free site with lots of info. You can also google free genealogy websites.

Most major cities have special collections sections of at the library. Maybe not your local library, but the headquaters of your city or county. Call and ask for the family research collections. There you will be able to do census research for free. They also have subscriptions to websites and will allow you free research. From these primary sources you build your family tree step by step.
