Euthanasia killed over 4 million young dogs in shelters last year in USA, so that would likely be the most common and preventable cause of death..
In puppies, Parvo, here in USA...in adults, heartworm is the cause of many deaths and much ill health..It used to just be only on the southern Eastern seaboard, but has spread to every state but Hawaii..
after that, probably pyometra or mammary cancers, both preventable by spaying young.

Bad owners. Causes many medical problems and end in death.
NB: Bad Owners: those who deliberately put their dogs at risk; those who through ignorance put their dog at risk; those who through mistaking the dog for a human put the dog at risk with over-indulgence and inappropriate treatment (physical and psychological)

Cancer seems to be the worst problem our babies are having to fight these days. Parvo and Distemper are the primary diseases that are claiming the lives of puppies. Epilepsy is another killer that threatens our loves. It creeps up silently, going from a simple twitch to wracking spasms. Then you have CHD, PRA, and heart disease. Way too many problems our kids are having to fight.

Depending on age, there's parvovirus in pups, pancreatitis and hip dysplasia in adults, and osteoarthritis in geriatrics. Certain breeds can be prone to certain diseases as well.
