Short answer: pretty much.
I was reading an article the other day talking about how a particular political candidate for president in 2008 didn't stand much of a chance because he was a Mormon. Like they forgot that whole Jimmy Carter thing.
Here's a quote from the Boston Globe:
"But Romney has a problem. He is a Mormon, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which, as Washington Monthly’s editor Amy Sullivan points out, makes him unacceptable to evangelical voters who make up 30 percent of the Republican electorate. Their hostility to Mormonism is not some vague prejudice that some Americans have. It’s a ‘’doctrinal thing,” based on their conviction that Mormonism ‘’isn’t just another religion,” but a ‘’cult” that they claim is ‘’false,” ‘’blasphemous,” and a threat to the Christian religion."
You'll note that this author seems to think not only that some Americans DO have a vague prejudice against Mormons, but also that many of them have a very specific disdain for it. And I suspect that you won't have long to wait to see some good examples of ignorance, prejudice, and intolerance right here.
Sorry, mate.

I don't understand why this question was asked, but...
I am a Latter-Day Saint, a.k.a. Mormon. I have not been brainwashed. Sorry. Maybe I can answer a few of your questions. How do we "get around" Galatians 1:6-9? Oh, good question. We believe in the same gospel that was taught by the Apostles of Christ. This gospel was corrupted by human error and fallacy over the centuries. Joseph Smith restored the gospel to the Earth as a prophet of God - If the people in ancient times were privileged enough to have prophets and apostles, why don't we? Joseph Smith, a prophet, was called by God through an angel to restore the gospel - Paul, an apostle, was called by God through an angel - angels appeared to Abraham, Moses, Jacob...
Now, if we are practicing the same gospel, there has never been an angel from heaven that has taught us any other gospel.
Also, the part of the Bible that says that we cannot add or take away is in the Book of Revelation. John wrote the Book of Revelation BEFORE writing the other books that come before it in the New Testament. Does this mean that John was a false prophet and a false apostle? No. It means John was referring to the Book of Revelation.
In Ezekiel 37:16-19, it refers to the "Stick of Judah". That's obviously the Bible. It also refers to the "Stick of Joseph". Well, what's that? No other Christian denomination has come up with an answer. The Stick of Joseph is the Book of Mormon. In Ezekiel 37:18, it says, "And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?" This reflects the obvious confusion over the interpretation of the scriptures. If all that was needed was the Bible, how come you have Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox? By adding the Book of Mormon, this confusion is removed.
One question for you non-LDS Christians: Where did you get infant baptism or sprinkling? The Bible states that Christ went down to Jordan "where there was much water". If all that was needed was a little bit of water, why go to a river? Also, if baptism comes from a Greek word meaning "to immerse", doesn't that imply baptism by immersion? Infants cannot sin - they don't understand what is right and what is wrong. Why must they be cleansed of sins they don't have?
AND WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT MORMONS BELIEVE THAT JESUS WAS A POLYGAMIST? I have never heard that anywhere in Church doctrine, never read it in the Book of Mormon, or read it in the Bible.

yea mormons no longer practice polygomy, most of them at least. where is why america doesnt understand mormons. because they have disproved and unbible like beliefs. things they believe that go agains the bible. some big things and some small things. exp. there are other gods. people can die and become gods. you can baptize the dead. there are 3 big ones right there. another huge one is the book of mormon all together. honestly, if god had somethin to be written wouldnt it be in the bible? yes. god had said that there will be antichrist.. people who claim to be sent by god and they will attempt to get followers of him. aka joseph smith. god warned of this and said clearly in the bible do not believe him. that there will not be any "prophet" but only a second coming. and the stories that they believe are contradicting. NO man has ever seen god. the bible says so. but yet joseph smith has? the bible tells us that we as flesh could not handle the sight of god. he is to great. so how did smith? there are many cult liek activities within the church. such as if one joines and wants to leave it is harsship on him and his family. they do not let him,and if he does he is hated by the mormon religion. another example is when christ died, the sheet seperating any one man in the church from everyone else was ripped in half. this telling us that ANY man can speak to god, and that no one man has more "special" comunications witih god. but yet there are ranks in the mormon church where they ar emore special than other members. and the mormon temple, according to them you can not enter unless you are pure and follow all the mormon beliefs. but god says let all enter my house. his house being the church. this tells me that the temple is NOT his house and is not a church because not all may enter. and the bible also teaches us that it is your personal choice to follwo him, nobody can make that choice for you. so if your dead how can you make that choice? you cant can you? but yet the mormons believe that they can and be baptized for the dead. that makes no sense according to the bible. and the teachings, many famous LDS leaders have taught against the bible and the book of mormon. they willt each one thing and people believe it, but yet the bible, and even their unholy book tells otherwise. how come there are so many contradictions in the religion? being a christian gets you into heaven. the ONLY way you can become christian is to accept him into your heart. and only chirstians get to heaven. so why do the mormons teach that if you do good things you can get into heaven? lastly they call them selves christians. you are a christian when you accept him into your heart, and follow his word. if you follow the book of mormon, then you are not following only his word now are you?

Mormons believe polygamy exists in heaven! So how exactly is that getting rid of it? The only reason polygamy was done away with was to get statehood. Mormons are not Christians. Mormons worship a different Jesus...just ask Hinckley.
The LDS Church News reported: "In bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, President Hinckley spoke of those outside the Church who say Latter-day Saints 'do not believe in the traditional Christ. No, I don't. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the Dispensation of the Fulness [sic] of Times'" (June 20, 1998, )
As far as the whole black race thing...oh yeah, you had to change that to keep up with the times. They were the cursed race and miraculously they are not now.
If you believe in the bible how do you get around galatians 1: 6-9?
let me refresh your memory: Or is it in error because it doesn't line up with the mormon doctrines?
Gal. 1:6-9
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel,
which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
You can call yourself a Christian until the cows come home. It will never make it so. Turn and repent of your sin before it's too late. You have been lied to. You are being deceived and if you have ever thought about it honestly and you still believe the lies, you are either brainwashed to the point of no return, and idiot, or just scared of hurting someone. I tell you the truth. Please listen and heed God's warning, while you still can.
P.S. I know all about the mormon church...don't assume that I don't. I know exactly what I'm talking about. I wouldn't waste my words if I didn't care about you...I am deeply concerned for you. I know you could probably care less, but take it for what it's worth.

No, they are not prejudiced against them. They know the truth about this group's history and know that it is not a Christian group. The worthy male argument didn't cut it before 1980. You have to take into consideration what Brigham Young said about the passage in 3 Nephi about people who truly repent have their skin turn light. Truly an illiminating speech! When people look at that, you can see how racist the church is.

I think that the majority of people consider them to be too prudish and strict. One of the friends, David, even goes as far as to say that they are a cult. Granted, he's not all that smart. But still, there is a lot of prejudice against them. I don't agree with it, personally. But that prejudice still exists. And the whole issue with polygamy doesn't help. Some people can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that those few polygamist are going against Mormon beliefs. Anyways, that's my belief.

I'd say that given America's tolerance for unorthodox religious groups, Mormons are pretty well-tolerated. I think there are some major doctrinal issues with Mormons, though, specifically that Joseph Smith claimed to have received "another" testament of Jesus Christ from an angel, in direct violation of Galatians 1:8.

I was a Mormon for 21 years. I am no longer a member, but I pretty much know everything about the faith and the history. Almost everything written here is a lie. Mormons are Christians. They believe in the Bible. The follow the Bible's teachings. They follow and worship Jesus. They accept Jesus as their personal savior and as a divine being who was crucified and rose from the dead after three days. THEY ARE CHRISTIANS! They don't practice polygamy anymore, but they did for awhile in the 1800's. PEOPLE: don't write about something you know nothing about!!!

Well, all you need to do is look at your answers to this question to get your answer. However, I don't think these individuals are a good cross-section of the US. I'm Mormon, American and I'm not prejudiced against mormons. Sure, I've been discriminated against because of my religion but I don't worry about it. I've been treated fairly much more than I've been dissed on because of religion.

I don't know what America's attitude is but my attitude is that Mormonism is just as wacky and false as all the other man made religious fairy tales.
And there are several breakaway groups of the Mormons who still do practice polygamy, child brides, and isolation from mainstream. One of their cult leaders, or "prophets" , Warren Jeffs was recently arrested after being on the FBI top 10 most wanted list.
