Have any of you objected, with quite so much...fervor,...to having been made to God Save the Queen in school. Or having the Archbishop of Canerbury preside at coronations. And the "Dieu et mon Droit" bit...in FRENCH, no less....

Yes, well, Anne, there was the bit of a tempest in a teapot about the Ten Commandments needing to be removed from More's courthouse...and of course, the big to-do about taking the Under God out of the pledge of allegiance....and the prayers and all other references to God out of public school...

Not being whiney m'dear, I too believe there are FAR more important things than symbolism to worry about, and was wondering if British atheists felt the same way.

But How is it that I was aware of all these movements WITHOUT having watched Fox news (whose neoconservative shills I despise?) Where are YOU hearing about current events, that you missed all the reporting on these?

Hardtack: I'm not fond of neocons, but on the other hand a Jew, (Jonas Salk) was behind the invention of the polio vaccine, too. Not to mention half of the talent behind the creation of the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals.

As a British Atheist I actually LOVE religious symbolism here in Britain....but I do not connect the religious elements of it to anything other than mans' fantastic ability to shape his own landscape ingeniously..

I refer of course to the the 1000 year old churches, cathedrals, palaces and castles that are all steeped in amazing artworks, architechure, history, pomp and grandeur that humbles me from a purely philosophical, intellectual (and artistic) point of view...I love them all, and regularly go on trips to study them around the country....Stonehenge, The Great pyramids of Egypt...again massive symbolism but more importantly, great historic structures...that is more important to me..

I genuinely do not give a crap about the reasons behind it all and don't believe anything myself...but I love the feeling of standing in the midst of such history, mystery and beauty...I love it...and it is nothing to do with the religious pilgramage thing that others go there for!

God Save The Queen...Couldn't give a crap, Jerusalem (by Blake) is more of a British anthem anyway, and that is just as steeped in mythical religious shiznit.

Archbishop of Cantebury presiding over things, fills me once again with the sense of history, I know this has been the case since Henry the VIII and the great scism between the Church of England and the Catholic Popes and I like that idea of preservation of culture...somethings stay the same as ceremonial testimony to history rather than any great religious thing...

I think I take a bit of a different view of things that atheists do usually...but that is MY personal atheism and it works for me!!

haha, you watch too much FOXNews! Not many atheists give a rat's a r s e about religious symbolism...much less start a "crusade". poor whiny christians are sooooo persecuted! cry me a f'n river.

--edit--
i've heard the reports hun. however, I can tell the difference between news and over-hyped propaganda. there are no "big-to-do's" about 10 commandments, "under god", and school prayer...these are small-time isolated events. Atheists don't care about those things, only one who care are the Christians who want you to believe that this country was founded a Christian nation, which couldn't be further from the truth.

P.S. Great answer Ichi!

Well, seeing as how the British Atheists don't have the same constituional protections that American Atheists do, then perhaps it's not so easy to compare them...I bet British Atheists throw a lot more u's in there and understand the rules of cricket.

I didn't know American atheists had such a crusade. It is not religious symbolism anyway that causes ignorance. It's the raw ignorance of church people claiming to be "saved" that causes ignorance.

They engender ignorance in their children, who grow up and do the same to their children.

Moreover, they vote; and that's how we got a president who is a total idiot.

The Jews are behind much of it. They are active in my town to make sure no religeous smbolism (except the star of david on the 10 Commandments , at the courthouse) is part of the city. Our city is named after Jesus.

I think one british atheist would approve (Richard Dawkins).

But, really, since the british don't have separation of church and state as one of the foundations of their government, the question is largely irrelevent.
