depends on what you take many shaver hairdryers and laptops amongst other items have dual voltage capabilities check the manual or plug connections on the items you want to take, hair dryers and razors have a clip that you push to change the voltage and many laptop tranformers can handle 110-240v hope this helps and enjoy NZ its a great country

When you say adaptor you mean a different style of plug yeah? Well I got some bad news for you, if you are going to use your US appliances you need an inverter which will step down the voltage from 240V to 110V. You also need to make sure it will handle a wattage @ 50-60 watts. If you try to use your 110V appliances without this you will blow them up. Just FYI if you were travelling in the other direction with Australian rated appliances, you would be able to put on an adaptor and plug 'em straight into the wall. Less is good, more is bad. If you check, some appliances are rated 110-240v anyway, especially Japanese and Korean made ones. A 240V appliance will operate in the States but not the other way around.

Don't take anything that has to plug-in unless it is convertible in itself, for example you can get travel blow dryers that have a switch for either 120V or 240V. Otherwise, it is a pain and too much to carry. Either get battery powered items, or buy the items cheap when you get there (especially with the exchange rate), or if you are staying at hotels can almost guarantee they will have the items you need either in the room or available at the front desk.

just buy a cheap alarm clock and blowdryer, cd player, etc when you get there.
It will reduce your luggage.
If you are staying in decent hotels, you won't even need to buy an alarm clock.

Really, what do you need to bring with you, that would cost the same or less to buy there...?

If you are staying with friends, leave the alarm clock, etc for them as a thank you for their hospitality.
