I'm in Canada, and I know that you need a 'smart serve' certificate here in order to bartend. And yes, bartending schools are real. They show you the ropes and make it easier, for the most part. They also tend to teach you some bad habits that take years to break out of. My uncle owns a bar, and he says that the best tenders he's had are the one's who just got the certificate.

Try going to a few college websites in your country/city and look up the apprentice programs. They should give you all of the pre requisits you'll need, and even a summary of cost/time.

the best experience is to just get behind the bar and do it. my dad had a bar when i was growing up, he told me he would never hire someone from a bartending school. my first time, my boss threw me behind the bar and went to thr races. came back and asked how i did. school cant teach you how to relate to different people and be quick on your feet. buy a bartenders guide, learn the basics and just do it. oh...and keep the book behind the bar with you! good luck.

Yes bartending schools are for real. But, most customers order the standers. If someone orders an off the wall drink, they will know how to make it.

Do the hard work first, sure the schools are good, but as a Barman I'm gonna hire someone who has the work/life experience over someone who's "learnt" the stuff at school. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the schools are S**T, I'm just saying the experience is better.
