A trained lion is not in touch with it's true self. It does what it does to gain rewards and avoid punishments. A socially conditioned human is in a very similar situation.

The true self of humanity doesn't act out of fear or greed, but out of understanding or the need to understand. It's hard to live a true life in a false society.

It means that the person had an inner calling to do something, s/he felt prompted by what makes that person unique to act in a likewise unique and particular way. However apparently this person's way of life way not welcomed by those around him/her and was made to feel that that which s/he felt was so absolutely and perfectly right was more difficult in practice than it really ought to have been.

I wanted to live in the way that my heart was leading me but there are so many influences that stop me from being true to myself. Why can't I let go of these hindering influences and follow my own spirit.

Other people's opinions cause us to doubt our own true selves and live our lives in a manner we don't really want to.For example I might really want to become a farmer but someone talks me into becoming an attorney. Why can't people just let me make my own choices?

The problem could possibly be my parents plans for my life, or perhaps it's peer pressure.

this quote reminds me about JJ Rousseau said: "humans born free but they are enchained from all parts" .

we can't live separated from the rest of the people... we must socialize in order to have a normal life.
unfortunately we are judged and blamed if we try to be different from the others.... so most of the time we must resign...
we can't live without making compromises

The quotation simply meant confusion and influence of the people around him. His goal was to understand/ get to know himself and to live life with self dependence and self control. It was difficult for him because of his surroundings that influence him to change and clear up his goal.

Trying to be at peace with one's conscience
seems simple, since you only have to listen to yourself, but it turns out that is harder than you think! (spiritual reason, because our consciences are connected to other souls, we natural pick up impulses and influences from others, so it often hard to distinguish the difference. that is why so many books are written on meditation to discipline the mind to focus inward on one's pure purpose and not to be distracted by competing thoughts or desires.)

With ALL the pressures applied to a person, it is much easier to know what is right, than to do what is right.
