I have a 10-month old mixed lab breed female dog. For nearly 3, maybe 4 months, she has been badly limping and not using one of her back legs at all. She can still get around just fine and can even run (but not too fast). It does not seem like it hurts her.

Our other two dogs seemed to go through a "limping stage" when they were puppies as well. Maybe to make us feel sorry for them, and to give them more attention? But they both soon grew out of this. But it did not take 3/4 months for them to grow out of it!

Does my little puppy have hip dysplasia? My parents won't take her to the vet because they know, if they do, they will not be able to afford surgery for her (if needed), and are not willing to pay a lot of money on a dog (which is logical).

Also, when she sits down, she sits real funny. Like a normal dog will sit on her hind legs. This puppy almost sits on her side, to avoid sitting on this one leg. But whenever we touch it, she never yelps, and never acts like it hurts.

yeah, probably. it probably couldn't hurt just to have the vet take some x-rays, just to be sure it's hip displaysia and not something more serious.

Okay there can be several causes.

There is what is nicknamed "growing pains" or panostetitis. That is where the bone is growing so fast they literally ache and the dog limps. They outgrow it 99% of the time. It comes and goes.

Now, if she has been limping continuusly since she was 6-7 months old somethng is probably wrong structurally. You can NOT diagnose hip dsyplasia based on limping or sitting funny.

She make have torn a muscle or or popped the joint in the leg or dislocated the leg.

There is another hereditary condition that leaes the dog reluctant to extend a rear leg and use it. You won't know unless she sees a vet.

I am a retired lawyer. Tell your parents that this is NOT logical or LEGAL

Under the humane laws of virtually every state, failing to provide medical care for an animal is a CRIME and they can be arrested and sent to jail. They have to at least pay to take her to the vet to see if to is a non-painful joint problem or something that is causing her pain. They can NOT ignore it because it wil cost money or they can be arrested..

It is NOT logical that they aren't willing to spend money on a dog. A dog can feel pain just as much as a human can, and they are far less deserving of any kind of suffering. Try to get your parents to take the puppy to a vet and if they refuse to pay for it, keep asking around until you can find a vet who will provide services at a lower cost.

You vet can do an X-ray of the hips and tell you for sure. Some dogs may never show or express pain. You are answering your own question by just asking your question. You notice a difference in your dog. That always tells me that I should be taking my dog to the doctor/vet and they will let you know for sure about your suspicions.

we had the same issue with our great dane puppy, she walked in a S shape with her hips, ran on a diagonal & is clumsy & bunny hopped when running it turned out to be she is just a puppy, she is clumsy & now she is 15 weeks and is much better, just takes them a while to form the muscles in the legs & to get the strength. Now she isnt running like a bunny, shes bigger and stronger now and is running perfect. we were just concerned parents like yourself but it turned out to be NOTHING :) hip Dysplasia is usually alot worse, where the dog falls over ALOT, or drags his feet whilst hes walking, , i think your pup will be fine hes just a puppy and is learning how to grab his feet & will be perfect soon.. if your worried keep an eye on him and when hes older about 5 - 6 months if its not better go to a vet & ask then, but they can only tell by x rays. Main thing is to prevent any injuries, so maybe walking up and down the stairs isnt a good thing incase he falls, so make sure he cant jump off them, or fall down them or other places in the house ETC, cos if he has a fall or an injury at such a young age it can do alot of damage.. but everything your wrote sounds the same as our great dane & within 2 months we saw her grow bigger and brighter & now shes fine

You're dog is in pain and needs to go to the vet. They can offer some meds that will be helpful, even some over the counter ones that aren't expensive. I'm not trying to be mean, but a dog is a committment, not a "I don't want to spend money on it" thing. Your dog has been in pain for 4 months. That is just inexcusable.

It might have it, I had 2 dosg that had it and were treated without surgery. You still need to take her to the vet for an x ray and determine what degree of sysplasio she might have. Sometimes with meds they live a healthy and long life. What you owe your dog is to be happy and able to move, so take her to the vet now

take her to your vet! she could have a number of problems, there is no one way to pinpoint a diagnosis on this website. The best thing you can do is have it x-rayed by your vet, it may be something like a fracture...you never know until you have it checked. It's not just for attention. They can hide pain very well. It could be something that could be fixed without sx. Just have it checked out at least.

Talk to the vet when she goes in for her next series of shots. They may be able to even feel the hips and see if it is a severe enough dysplasia to feel. The absolute best thing is to have the x-rays to see if the pup has something wrong.

Good Luck. I feel for you.
