There are a great many questions I've seen on here which have no easy answer. But there is always some "true believer" speaking for Jesus himself who "knows" the answer.

How do these guys actually come to believe they know god's will?

Do these people see themselves as prophets?

Should we medicate these people, or let them roam free?

People who claim to know God's will are saying that they get special information from an unseen being who talks to them. They scare the heck out of me.

I am not so sure what you mean. There are times I feel
God shows me his will for myself such as which job to
take, who to marry, which place to rent,or which church
to join. That takes prayer, Bible reading, meditation or that
still small voice which I hear when I listen. It must agree
with the written word of God.I don,t know the will for
someone else unless it is a clear commandment. I find
I'm the most happy when I try to do the will of God.
I don't expect someone who hasn't experienced this to
understand this. Hope this answers your question
to some extent.

I know God's specific will in certain circumstances and his general will in other circumstances from reading the Bible.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from fornication, 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God,

1 Peter 2:15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may silence the ignorance of foolish men--

1 Thessalonians 5:14 Now we exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the discouraged, be supportive of the weak, be patient toward all. 15 See that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue that which is good, both for one another and for all. 16 Rejoice always! 17 Pray without ceasing! 18 In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I think God's will is different for every person and only you know what it is for yourself but sometimes God can use other people to help them understand it.
If a parent has children of different ages, then doesn't it make sense if the older more experienced child helps the younger one?
That's not to say there aren't children who act on their own and say and do things that their parent never approved of-of course that happens. But most well-taught children try to help their younger siblings because they love them.

God's will and plans for mankind, in general, is laid out in the Holy book you want so badly to flush.

As for specific instances, it doesn't take a prophet to right apply the Bible's teachings - we're given discernment by the Author.

By reading God's word and studying it. Through prayer. Through keeping thoughts of Christ. Forming a relationship with God instead of just following a religion will help you come to know God and just like any earthly relationship, once you get to know someone, you know how they will react to certain situations. You learn boundaries with people when you really get to know them. Same goes for God. It's about the relationship. Have I mentioned relationship?

God has given us everything that pertains to righteousness. He has given us all the information we need. Surely we can repeat or paraphrase what He has said. That is how we know how He feels and thinks, and not by our own wisdom.

They are smarter than you are, for one thing. They open a Book and it tells them. You on the other hand, will be kept in eternal ingnorance because you have contempt prior to investigation.

It's written in His WORD... that is his will... IE. "God is not WILLing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (including you)"

Or, "for this is the WILL of God, that you abstain from fornication"

He tells us His will

how did you come to know how to walk?

oh right, it just came naturally.

anyway, the people who really do know god's will aren't arrogant enough to claim to speak for jesus himself, or CLAIM that he KNOWS how it is, as such.

if you really do know, then theres no reason to boast about knowing.
