How did they become like that?

MOST ARE NICE DOGS, a few are nasty (and that would true concerning ANY breed of dog). The nice ones are typical of the pit fighting breeds. The nasty ones were usually made that way because of a ruined puppyhood (neglect, teasing, lack of socialization, abuse, etc.) or because of backyard breeding (poor/ questionable genetics). A properly socialized and trained pit bull dog is a fine companion

MOST pitbulls are not mean and aggressive...the ones that are are made this way by their owners. Because they look tough, idiots who know nothing about dogs and who want to look cool adopt them and make them agressive. Also, they get a bad reputation from the news...they constantly report ANYONE bitten by a pitbull. Dogs of ALL breeds attack people everyday and they never get on the news. Believe me, chihuahuas attack more people than pit bulls do....it just would not make a very worthy news story. Because you asked this question...it shows you have fallen victim to the propaganda the news dishes out!!!

to JustDucky: very easy to cut and paste some info off the web...but have you EVER even had any experience with pitbulls? If all you have to offer is some random internet info without any real experience...just keep your comments to yourself, and I noticed how you ONLY pasted the negative parts of that site..which it's main point was telling about the bad rep they have and how they could make good pets with the proper guidance, owners, and training...like ANY dog breed. How come you did NOT copy and paste THAT part???

Pit bulls, or any of the bully breed, are not aggresive and mean. I have one sitting on my bed with me right now who is very submissive, has never growled in anger, barked or intimidated anyone (except with his tail). Pitties are very loyal and will defend it's owner, and do pretty much whatever an owner asks of it. This is what makes them "great" fighters. When prompted and raised to be aggressive toward other dogs, a pit bull will latch on and not let go until death, in most cases. They are very tenacious. The sumbissive pits would be used as bait dogs, or the wimps of the bully world (mine would be a bait dog, thank goodness I got him first).

Bully's were initially Nanny dogs in the UK and were raised to be "babysitters" for little kids. This is because of their loyalty and protectiveness and the need to keep its owners safe and loved. My dog does this when my little cousins are around. He loves to play tackle, but will twist his body so they land on him, rather then on the ground.

No dog is born mean, just like no child is inherently evil. It is all in how they are raised and socialized as young dogs. I've seen meaner chiuauas then I have pitties.

they are a great family dog. back in the 20's and 30's families would have them instead the now popular golden retiver. If you talking about the American Pit bull then you should know they have fierce loyalty to their owners and if the owners want them to be bad, or think they are, they will be to be what they are wanted to be. I have one that is an Alfa male that retreats from the maildude. It is how they are raised. though a few bad breeders don't help when they breed fighters for mass breeding cause then any dog will be mean if raised on puppy farms.

The Pit Bull Heritage
The pit bull’s ancestors hail from England and were brought to North America by English immigrants. These descendants were bred from bulldogs, who were selectively bred to participate in an inhumane blood sport called baiting. In this “sport,” a dog was trained to attack a bull, bear or other large animal around the face and head, and had to hang on without releasing his grip until the animal became exhausted from fighting and from loss of blood. When animal baiting was banned in the early 1800s, people began to make their dogs fight against each other instead. As this sport gained popularity, enthusiasts developed a lighter, more athletic dog by breeding bulldogs with black and tan terriers. Known as “bull and terriers,” these dogs made their way to North America to become the forefathers of today’s pit bulls.

With the kind of genetic breeding described above, how can ANYBODY think that they are mean only because of the owner? Please everybody, study genetics, would you all??

Their owners. Certain breeds are associated with certain traits, but personally I've seen pit bulls behave like big babies, gentle you name it. I've also seen chiwawa (excuse spelling) act like they own the sidewalk, had to move off the sidewalk, and resent it because the dog wasn't as big as my foot. Its the OWNER. TRAINER. Once there was a dog crying at my window, I brought it in, gave it some water, and invited it to sit on my couch with me. It would not get up on any furniture. After a while I decided to walk around the neighbourhood with it, knock on doors and ask if they owned it. Peoples reactions were really weird. Didn't get it. I came home woke my son up (teenagers sleep late), and said What am i going to do with this dog, its really well trained walks beside me and no one wants to come near it. He said "Mom that dog is a pit bull". And there you go.

Basically from their owners. I knew a Pit Bull that was the sweetest and most affectionate dog of all the dogs I have ever known. He was cared for, played with, given attention and didn't have a mean bone in his body.

One word, PEOPLE. How people can take little puppies and use them for bait? It's so horrible I can't bear the thought. This with bad breeding leads to problems. No Pitty is born this way although with the bad breeding they may have the tendency. It takes a bad owner to train them to be mean. Otherwise many people will tell you that this is a wonderful breed. I see lots of them at shows that have wonderful temperaments and get along just fine with all the other dogs.
