It is the law and this is a good law. Car companies design the safety systems to be the most effective when a seat belt is used. I came out of a car a long time ago in an accident. Luckily I only suffered a skinned up tush and forearm. I have been a believer in seat belts ever since. I would like to see belts that support the other shoulder and keep you tighter in the seat during an accident. There will always be examples of not wearing a seat belt that saves someone life. But here is the real question. Why was there an accident in the first place?? That needs to be addressed first. We are a nation of unskilled, uncaring, unaware drivers that cause countless accidents and injuries. This needs to be address and fixed first, last, and always.

You may have the choice of wearing a seat belt, if I have the choice whether you receive intensive care following an accident when the injuries are significantly worse than if you had worn a belt. I wouldn't want to see scant resources wasted on fools who don't protect themselves.
I remember a poster when the law was introduced years ago, it had a woman with a smashed up face saying 'there should be a law against this' giving the impression she had been beaten up when she had recived them from smashing her face into a wndscreen at 50mph.

I used to question this one? Seatbelts can kill people without doubt, but on averages they save lives more often. I have been fined for not wearing a seat belt, as i was a driver before the law was enforced i struggled to get used to a belt, i now wear it at all times. not for abiding by the law issues, i'm just comfortable with it now, i guess i feel vunreble without it now? Choice???? a tough one??? i'm going with......Law to wear a belt.

I think it should be drivers' choice HOWEVER if you are in an accident and severely hurt, and this could have prevented by wearing the seat belt... the issue is not so much anyone is truly concerned about the damage you did to yourself but more so the cost of the medical expenses in fixing you up.

Could be that statistically seat belts DO save lives both drivers and pedestrians. Be honest is it a big deal to belt up 2/3seconds. And another thought it would help in cutting down expenses of the NHS.

You may as well ask if a driver with bad eyesight should be allowed to drive without wearing his/her glasses. It is the law to wear seat belts and it is also sensible to do so. The Driver and passengers SHOULD always wear seat belts - it is surely no great problem!

You want to kill or maim yourself, go ahead. Just don't expect the NHS, the State or anyone else to look after you if you are so stupid as to not wear a seat belt and give yourself a sporting chance. If you put yourself at risk, then you should bear the consequences and not expect to have your mediacl expenses and care paid for you.

Have you ever considered that if you were in a RTA and not wearing a seatbelt that you might not die...but instead be horrifically disfigured or permanently physically disabled in some way. Just wear the seat belt!!!

I feel it is the individual's choice to wear a seat bell or not. I have a brother that had been in a car accident had he had a seat belt on he would be dead..

It's your right not to wear a seat belt just as long as you don't complain if you get caught or get your face ripped off in an RTA.
