Jam is a type of sweet spread or condiment made with certain fruits or vegetables, sugar, and sometimes pectin.

A jelly is a sweet or savoury food gel, usually made through the addition of gelatin or pectin to edible liquids.

This is interesting!

I grew up making Both Jellies and Jams.

Jam is smashed fruits with seeds and the pulp.

Jelly is just the juice of the fruit.

Both are made with sugar and pectin. Both are a mess to make. And both taste good, however I perfer Jam, and I really like the fuzzy stuff ya scrape off when ya make Jam. DANG That's good stuff. I am actually also amused at this post and the people's responses to it.

Jelly, jam and preserves are all made from fruit mixed with sugar and pectin. The difference between them comes in the form that the fruit takes.

* In jelly, the fruit comes in the form of fruit juice.
* In jam, the fruit comes in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit (and is less stiff than jelly as a result).
* In preserves, the fruit comes in the form of chunks in a syrup or a jam.

Pectin is an undigestible carbohydrate (fiber). It is found in the cell walls of most fruit. When heated with sugar in water, it gels, giving jam, jelly and preserves their thickness.

Jell-O is entirely different. It is made from gelatin, which is a protein made from animal skins and bones.

PS,

It was really amusing to read some of the responses! Incidentally, I'm a maitre chef.
