Nicotine does occur naturally in tobacco; the word "nicotine" comes from the Latin name of the plant, "nicotiana spp." The particular plant that is used in most tobacco products is "nicotiana tabacum." That being said, quite a lot has been said in the media in recent years about tobacco companies adding nicotine to many tobacco products to increase dependency.
