I am a Christian, and I have studied the Qur'an in-depth and i do not see it as either a peaceful, or non-peacful religion. What are your thoughts on this?

I would suggest you catch up on the news and find out how many countries are under attack presently by Islamists. The last count I saw was 33 countries..If you want to consider a religious group trying to take over those countries, as being peaceful, that is your prerogative...But these wars have been going on for 20 years in some instances. Even the Philippine Islands are undergoing constant attack. And this is basically a catholic country.

Muslims do not even agree. It is an old and strict religion and it has been tied to ruling power for too long.
Question: Is the US a peaceful government? Doesn't look like it.

Yes Islam is a peaceful religion.Islam means clean and dedicated to Allah only..In Surah 1 Alfaatihah verse 5 we pray to Allah please show me the straight way, that is meant the right path in line with holy Qur'an.In surah2 Al Baqarah verse 11 Allah said "Do not make damages in this earth" means physical and moral destructions. verse 30 no bloodshed, verse 43 pray and pay zakat or islamic taxes verse 45 be patient and pray as helping for you.verse 178 muslims should make revenge or qishaash for murdering but can give a foregiveness by paying a compensation (diat) Verse 190 please reattack if you are attacked but do not without limitation (do not cruel),Allah hates cruelty. Verse 192 if they stopped making you as their enemy, you must stop your reattack.Allah is omni forgiveful and merciful.Verse 219 there is greater sin for alcoholic drinking and gambling than its beneficiary.Verse 256 there is no force for entering Islamic religion that is a clear right way..Verse 263 wise word and forgiveness is better than a gift followied by hurting words.Verse 175 people who eats high interest (riba) could not be stand up because he/she is like crazy person entered by satan..Verse 282 record your purchase and its liability by an honest and qualified accountant with 2 men winesses. .Surah 3 Ali Imran verse 101 please be hold Allah and do not be separated you are brothers and sisters..Surah 4 An Nisaa verse 1 please maintain a good relationship (silaturahim) .Surah 112 Al Ikhlash verse 1 up to 4 Allah the only one God,All depend on Allah,.Allah has no child and no parents, there is no one similar to Him. Surah 109 Al Kaafiruun verse 1 up to 6 Hey the unbelievers (kafir),i do not want to pray to what you pray, and you are not the prayer to Allah the one that I pray,I will never be a prayer to what you pray, for you your religion and fo me my religion.
Those are the symptoms that Islamic teaching is a peaceful religion. and no force.

Islam is peaceful in the respect that in times of war, it gives you rules for war (yet at the same time its practical) and at times of peace it tells you how to live a peaceful life (morally and spiritually).

It is probably the most practical religion in the whole world -- which is why I personally believe it is the Truth.

you're able to be able to desire to agree that there are a number of non violent Muslims. in fact maximum all of us is non violent. despite if Islam does have an unpleasant section. And it somewhat is that this gruesome section it somewhat is turning out to be further and extra the sought after face of Islam. it is likewise upseting that maximum of stable all of us is being sucked into the gruesome portion of Islam. What could be accomplished. If u.s. resists then it somewhat is accused of attempting to break Islam. the respond could desire to come from the ranks interior of Islam itself. i think than in the subsequent ten years there will be great wars with Muslims struggling with Muslims. in the event that they do no longer then the gruesome portion of Islam will take dominion over all Muslims.

I concur. Muhammad in his earlier surahs speaks VERY favorably of Jews and Christians and later, once he got rejected by them, he began to persecute them and do terrible things, especially to Jews. As a result his later surahs are very dark and hostile towards Jews and Christians complete with built in misunderstandings of the virgin birth and the trinity. But you seldom hear Muslims quoting those verses but they know darn well that theyre there and they know how Muhammad actually felt about Jews and Christians despite his earlier comments about them.

Therefore when a Muslim committs acts of violence, he is only in keeping with the best traditions and oldest hallmark of his religion; oppression and violence.

Quran advocates fighting only for self defense. First verse in Quran that states fighting is
"2:190. And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits. "

If you study the life of Prophet Mohammed, you can see, he was only preaching the revelation which he received and it was those who opposed to his message that turned violent towards him. So he first practiced maximum restraint when he and his followers were abused and attacked in Meccah. Then finally when the torture became unbearable they left their town and migrated towards medina. When the enemy in mecca followed the prophet in Medina with a large army, the first war in Islam known as Bedr took place.

if you search whole Quran you can find only fighting prescribed only for self defence. Some people quote verse from the middle to show that Quran prescribes killing all unbelivers. One most quoted verse is
" 9: 5. So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush,"

Without quoting the context and the verses below and above a neutral reader will judge Quran is commanding to kill all idolaters. But it's context is only regarding a particular group of idolaters who made an agreement with Muslims and later conspired against them breaking the treaty. This is clear from the preceeding verse
" 9: 4. Except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfill their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty)."

Eventhough fighting is allowed for selfdefence, patience and peace is given importance
"And if you take your turn, then retaliate with the like of that with which you were afflicted; but if you are patient, it will certainly be best for those who are patient. " Quran 16:126.

"And not alike are the good and the evil. Repel (evil) with what is best, when lo! he between whom and you was enmity would be as if he were a warm friend.
And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune. Quran 41: 34-35.

See what Quran says how to deal with those who are not fighting with you
"60: 8. Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice."

See this verse, on how war is discouraged
"Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief. " Quran 5: 64
