My son who is 19 months old fell down and twisted his foot. We took him to the hospital and had his entire leg and hip region x-rayed. He also had a catscan just to make sure there was nothing there. Nothing is broken or dislocated, nothing even swelled up, but now he will not walk on it at all. When he stands, he holds his foot up. I know he is not in pain, I can feel all around on his foot and he never makes a face or noise. But I cannot get him to walk again. This happened a week ago. Does anyone have any ideas or similar stories? Maybe this is more common than I think it is. I really wasn't too worried about it seeing as toddlers fall all of the time. But when he refused to bear any weight on it, my husband and I became concerned. Now all our little boy will do is crawl. He can stand, but like I said he will not bear weight on his foot. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope some of you have some answers for me.

No one knows your child as well as you do. If your sure his leg and/or foot don't hurt, than he might be like my son. Any time my little guy got hurt, he would be afraid to try that activity again. This was generally a good thing since most of the time he hurt himself, he was doing something he wasn't supposed to anyway. Since he doesn't fuss when you touch his leg, it doesn't appear to be a bid for sympathy or attention. It probably hurt him quite a bit when he first injured himself and he's afraid of that happening again. However well intentioned, your constant concern and checking his leg might be reinforcing his fear. I would try ignoring the problem (if your absolutely certain he's in no pain). Kids instinctively follow our lead. If you seem worried, he'll think there's reason to worry. Even children younger that your son can sense the moods of people. Let him crawl around until he forgets about the injury. If you want to feel around his leg to check for sore spots, do it while tickling him or blowing raspberries on both of his legs so he doesn't realize what your doing. I'm sure he'll start walking again when his confidence returns. Besides, it might just be a little sore when he puts his weight on it. Just give him some time.

I used to be the same way, come to think of it i still am, sadly, lol. I used to try walking around or trying out whatever I hurt slowly bit by bit. After a while I wouldn't remember to take it easy or anything pain on an infant is very impressionable, i know i have one of my own,4 months. Once something is done or happened to them it takes a good while and i mean good while to get back to their no caring selves. the best advice i can give at this point is to just show him when you check his foot and tell him that if that doesn't hurt there's then he shouldn't fear walking on it again that it will be alright, his scared that's understandable, just reassure him till your blue in the face and show him help him gradually put it on the ground pace on him though and over time he wont be so pressured into remembering the pain by his conscience

You might have to bribe him and say something like "i wanted to take you to the park today but I cant because you have a sore leg" wait for his response if he keeps saying his foot is still sore it maybe. My son had a sore leg for 3 weeks and a scan showed nothing I gave him nurofen for the pain. This might help your son as his leg may not still be 100% even though there's no damage that the xrays revealed he could have muscle soreness which can take a couple of weeks to heal.

It sounds like he is afraid it will hurt. It hurt when he put weight on it before, and so to him it will hurt again if he puts weight on it. If you are sure he is not in pain, then I would just wait it out. maybe put things he wants like a sippy cup, bottle if he still has one, snack out of reach . He will probably crawl most of the time, but he may forget to crawl if he wants it bad enough. He will probably start walking again soon. Look at it this way, he is a very smart little fellow, to be able to remember not to walk on it. Most kids his age don't do that yet.

My daughter hasn't started walking yet. My mom does have pictures of me when I was learning to walk as a baby. I had a black eye for a month or so because I kept crashing into the same thing over and over again.

if you think something is still wron with the foot have a follow up xray to check for stress fractures, they take a while to show up on films. i work in podiatry office and i know a sprain that doesn't seem to quite go away often shows up as stress fracture on follow ups. check with pediatrician, if he is only a few weeks out on injury give him another two for follow up films and in the meantime hopefully he will "fix" the problem over time for himself, he probably is not sure it isn't going to hurt just yet, give him some time.

Possibly do a psychological trick with him. Get him some new "magic" shoes that you tell him are specially made to be sure that his feet never get hurt again. Then tell him he has to try them out and let it go at that. (You know, the Dumbo's feather theory)

if there is nothing wrong then he might just be milking it. I suggest you pay no attention. Just ignore it and he will get over it eventually.
