Write him a nice hand written poem that explains how grateful you are to have him in your life. That will also tell the story of how you met and what your dreams for the future are. Perhaps have this laying on his pillow when you rent the room. Trust me it will mean a lot more than any gift you get him as it will come from your heart.

I did that for my boyfriend - but it was a total surprise because it wasn't his birthday or anything - we live in Santa Cruz, Ca - so with out him knowing I rented a room up in the mountains - there is also a restaurant there - i told him we were just going there for dinner at 8pm -- i had already been there around 3pm to check in and get the room ready - i had ALOT of candles and rose petals i but all over the room and bed - i had champange and chocolate as well...i set everything up - including the outfit i bought :-) (something i would never normally wear) I also got a wig and some stripper shoes! So I came back down to Santa Cruz and we got ready to go out to dinner - We got there and had a nice dinner - it was a very expensive - i then said i had to go to the bathroom and i gave the water a bunch of numbered envelopes to give to my BF - i then ran up to the room the change and he had a scavenger hunt to do -- the last note said to knock on our room number -- which he did - and i yelled for him to come in - he then saw the surprise and i told him we were staying the night - he loved it!
