When I write to my friends and family that are deployed I try to go into as much detail as possible. So "I went to the store today and bought some shoes" turns into what I did before going to the store, how I was looking for some inparticular and the music that was playing on the radio, the weather. I also write about local news, weather, and any funny or cute things the kids or family did. Tell your friend he is in my prayers and thank him for his bravery and committment.

When I write to my friend overseas, it's usually been a few months, so I just go through all of the more major things that happened since I talked to him last. I talk about family, friends, work, etc. Don't forget to ask him questions, too. I always ask about his family back here at home and make sure he is doing okay. Just the fact that you are taking time out to write him will let him know that you really care. That is the kind of support they need when they are over in another part of the world. My friend is very appreciative that I care enough to write him. Most of our other friends don't do the same.

Reminders of home life and a sane world. Shopping at the grocery. Baking a pie today made you think of him.
Getting a new pair of sneakers reminded you of that vacation you both took one time.
Echoes of shared experiences might be good.
Teasing him about his crazy brother or dad because you visited them today. Mention of common friends, the dog and places you both like to eat at.
Maybe even things you are preparing for his return -- a quilt you are making or some special clothes or a scrapbook of stories with his name or news items.
Keep it light and chatty -- let him know you'll be there when he gets back but you are not pining in misery without him.
Believe in what he is doing - but hope for a quick end to it all.

From experience. He wants to here everything that's going on in your life, his friends life's, and his families lives. He will want to know how and what every one is doing, and that people ask about him all the time.

NOW! You defiantly want to get somewhat explicit with personal details that only you and he would know about, if you get my drift.

Let me tell you the facts. getting a letter with one sentence is better than getting no letter at all.

Good luck and always tell him to be safe.

When my husband was deployed I would send him letters that only said I love you. that is it just one line. he kept every one of them. Tell them about your day, or plans. Never bring any thing negative in to it, they have enough to worry about to have to worry about your troubles too. find funny cartoons and print them off and include them in your letter. if you get along with his mother, call her check up on her and let him know how she is doing. it makes them feel good to have some looking out for his parents. Send pictures of home to him and of you.

remember that all his buddies will read it also. he wants to know that you are safe and you love him. when i was overseas we did not get commercials on TV so tell him about any funny commercials and basically give him a letter long enough to take his mind off of where he is for a minute or two. send pictures of all his family and kids. he is lonely.
