I work in a bad area, my car was broken into today. I don't have an alarm system, and I can't afford one. What can I do to make my car unappealing to thieves? How likely is it to happen again? (And please, no smart a ss answers. I'm not from the city and really don't know. Where I live most people don't even lock their cars.)

The main thing is not to leave anything out in the open for vandals to see. They will break into a car for fifty cents. Don't leave money, CD's wallets cell phones etc.laying out in the open. When you have to take these things with you just hide them when you are gone for an extended period of time and lastly make sure your doors are always locked!!

Remove anything of value and keep the inside as clean as possible. I rarely, if ever, lock my doors as I'd hope any self-respecting thief would try the door before breaking the window. My car was parked in my driveway in a nice neighborhood and thieves opened the door, rummaged through some stuff in my glove box and console, and moved on to the next car.

Park it in a locked garage. That's about the only way.

Drive an old banger. Gaping hole in the dash where the radio would go. No attraction to the mindless yobs who do such things.

An alarm doesn't stop that type of behaviour, it only wakes up the neighborhood once it's happened.

This isn't a smart-ar$e answer, just basic facts of life.

Here's what I do. Get like a rosary or a good size cross on some string and hang it on your rear view mirror.
Get a baby on board sign
anything that will put thieves on a guilt trip.
I'd try Christian bumper stickers too but I'm not that hardcore.

Use a steering wheel club-type lock for protection against theft, though not vandalism.

Make it unappealing to thieves. Don't leave ANYTHING of value in it. Park under street lights and as close to a populated area as possible. Also, get an alarm.

All you have to do is make sure theres nothing in there that they would want. Hide any radar detectors, cel phones, etc. and they wont have any reason to look in there and think " this is worth breaking in for". Also fake alarm lights that blink are cheap and easy to find, maybe fooling the would-be thief. Alarm stickers help too.

ask your employer if they would install security cameras, and you can install one at your home. if your employer says no then buy one yourself and get a vcr from a 2nd hand store, the cameras start as low as $29.00 and are very easy to install, it's so easy a caveman could do it.
