My husband is an electrician. The way he started was he got a job as an apprentice. The way to do that is to get hired on with an electrical company in your area. They will train you. They will offer to send him to school one night per week for two years and then he can take his electrical license test. Then he can go into business for himself if he wants. My husband didnt even take the classes. He just learned on the job and then took the test and passed. The first year you are an apprentiss, then a journeyman, then once you take the test you are an electrician. The pay gets better and my husband loves the work... especially now for himself. They only advice I can give is to join the local IBEW union office. It pays for all the insurance and 401K . What state? Email me if you have any more questions at nascarluvinmom@yahoo.com

Get a job with an electrical contractor as a helper. After some experience, take a test and become a licensed electrician. College is not necessary. Requirements vary by state.

He will have to start with different levels of licenses. One of the lower levels is the journeyman's license. The final level is an electrician's license. It does vary some by state.

Depending on the state, he may have to go to college to get licensed. have him apply with an electrical contractor and they can tell him all he needs to know.
