Freemasonry is a fraternal organization whose membership is held together by shared moral and metaphysical ideals and—in most of its branches—by a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.
The fraternity of Freemasonry uses the allegorical metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, to convey what is most generally defined as: A peculiar (some say particular or beautiful) system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. This is illustrated in the 1991 English Emulation Ritual.
It is an esoteric society only in that certain aspects are private; Freemasons have stated that Freemasonry has, in the 21st century, become less a secret society and more of a "society with secrets." Dr. Dieter Anton Binder,a historian (and not a Freemason) who is a professor at the University of Graz (Austria) describes Freemasonry as a "confidential" society in contrast to a secret society in his book Die diskrete Gesellschaft. Most modern Freemasons regard the traditional concern over secrecy as a demonstration of their ability to keep a promise and a concern over the privacy of their own affairs. "Lodge meetings, like meetings of many other social and professional associations, are private occasions open only to members."The private aspects of modern Freemasonry deal with the modes of recognition amongst members and elements within the ritual.

I am. And in response to anyone who thinks that it can't be told, you are mistaken, or watch too many Oliver Stone films. Look around in public, especially at older gentleman wearing large signet rings, chances are a few of those rings will have a square and compass on them. For whoever said their grandMOTHER was a Freemason, she is probably in the Eastern Star, women cannot be Freemasons. Personally, I have a square and compass tattoo, I don't like jewelry. And trust me, we don't run the world, the secret ninja Monkeys do that.

Freemasonry
Although it tries to trace its roots back to the building of Solomon's Temple, Freemasonry actually developed of moderate Enlightenment thinkers. Freemasonry is a fraternal organization made of up people from diverse religious backgrounds (all members must be male and theists) seeking to achieve greater understanding of each other and social connections which lead to communal stability. Because of its ecumencial tendencies and its inclusion of non-Christian rites and traditions, fundamentalists have long harbored deep suspicions and even prejudices about Freemasons. Freemasonry was, however, very important both socially and politically in the early development of the United States.

"While there probably are some actual stone-workers who are Masons, Masonry does not teach is membership the literal techniques of stonework. Rather, it takes the actual 'operative' work of Medieval Masons and uses it as an allegory for moral development. Thus, the symbols of Masonry are the common tools that were used by medieval stonemasons: the gavel, the rule, the compass, the square, the level, etc. Each of these has a symbolic meaning in Masonry. For example, Masons are said to meet 'on the level', meaning that all Masons are brothers, regardless of social status, personal wealth, or office within the Lodge or in the world at large. Similar symbolism exists for other tools."
- Andrew Fabbro, Freemasonry FAQ Version 1.2
"The purpose of Masonry is to train a human being so that he will reconstuct, through the body of change and death which he now has, a perfect physical body which shall not be subject to death. The plan is to build this deathless body, called by modern masons Solomon's Temple, out of material in the physical body, which is called the ruins of Solomon's Temple."

The mission of Freemasonry is to promote a way of life that binds like minded men into a worldwide Brotherhood that transcends all religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences; by teaching the great principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth: and, by the outward expression of these, through its fellowship, its compassion and its concern, to find ways in which each may serve his God, his family, his country, his neighbors and himself."
A member of Freemasonry ( world wide ) is a freemason.
