in the early bible, it states that you should not eat cloven hoofed animals and also something about not eating animals that eat meat. now days it is practiced for traditional reasons of following those early laws.
an anthropologist wrote a book called cows pigs wars and witches and talked about how for those herding societies, pigs were a competitor for food that humans could eat where cows and goats were not. so it made more sense to raise animals for food that would convert grass into a usable food source than to raise pigs that ate things people could eat.

Most ancient laws were established to protect people from danger. The Jews prohibited eating the flesh of the pig, because pigs are scavengers and often carried tapeworm. Instead of going into lengthy explanations they simply said God forbids it. Living in the same climate, the Muslims included this prohibition.
The same goes for alcohol Alcohol dehydrates and isn't a good idea in desert conditions. Incidentally, the prohibition of alcohol appears in the Songs of Solomon, well before Mohamed came on the scene.
Circumcision should be understood by any un-circumcised male who has ever got sand under his foreskin.

My fiance is Muslim and he is forbidden to eat pork as they believe it is dirty meat. Unfortunately this means that one of the sacrifices i have to make in order for us to marry is giving up pork (don't worry, I've compiled a list of do's and dont's for him too!) It's been 6 months since i last ate pork and I'm avoiding farms now in case i lose control and start biting the pigs!!

If following the kosher diet(Jesish), pork is not on the menu. From what I've gethered it is believed that a pig is a "dirty" or inappropriate animal to eat. Others won't eat pork of course if they're vegetarian or vegan, which isn't a religion, however some preah it as if it is one.

I don't think it has anything about the taste of the meat but rather the fact pork can turn bad very quickly. It could mean the difference between life and death hundreds of years ago. It was just good advice years ago and it just got mixed up into the religious dogma of the day.

It was actually because pigs are scavengers and they will eat anything in their path, and they usually lived in very filthy conditions, hence the phrase "this room is a pig stye", and they are also more susceptible to diseases than some animals, at least this was the case in "Biblical Times" and supposedly God told the his followers, mainly jewish at this time to stay away from pork because of the above reasons, however today they believe this more out of tradition than actual necessity as our ability to raise pigs and keep them disease free has greatly improved.

Both Islam and Judaism forbid the eating of pig, theres no real 'officially defined' reason. It says so in the Torah (I think thats where it is, I know it even says so in the bible) and Qu'ran.
You could have a look at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_restrictions_on_the_consumption_of_pork
for many suggested reasons, including the fact that pigs bathe in their own feces
edit: The "unhealthy" and "causes disease" answers are wrong, because when it started, they didn't know it was bacteria etc. that caused the disease, and they sure as hell didn't know eating too much of a "fatty food" was bad for you.

Has nothing to do with "liking" it, For health reseans there are/were restricted from the diets.
Not just pork.. any animal with uncloven hooves that doesn't chew cud, sea creatures with out scales etc. I'm sure there are more restrictions. Just remember when all this was established there where no fridges or other health controls.

Margaret W is correct. I also heard that because pigs can sometimes carry a parasite that causes trichinosis in humans (or another malady that sounds similar to that name), which can be deadly, their meat was considered "unclean". You did get a good selection of answers on this one.
Great question.

Not eating pork and shellfish was originally because in hot countries they went off more quickly than other meats. It was a sensible precaution which became part of some religions.
