Reading the answers to this question gives the impression that someone has either been to heaven and is back talking about it, or is in gods phone book. I never heard such insecurity and lonliness in my life.
You poor dears, I would like to sit with you and read some of the passages out of the Bible and have you explain them to me, for example, Leviticus 25, para 45. "Moreover of the children of the stranger that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land : and they shall be your possessions."
So, what does this mean?
Also, what are Bondsmen and maids that are talked about here?

so you say: "It is nothing but a book of metaphors, fables and ancient storytelling. Most of the people and places might of existed (there is no evidence of Moses though), but that doesn't give it any validity." but, have you even checked your sources and scholarly research? I mean when I say I take it "literally" i mean that I believe it to be the TRUE world of God. IF you claim that it has "no validity" than you are denouncing the most historical book ever written. If you would look, you could see thousands of proofs that the Bible is literal. The Roman Historian Josephus, wrote a complete account of the Jewish people up until the destruction of the Temple in AD 70, and thereafter. He shows that the Bible is true and written about in MANY other extra-biblical sources. It is interesting, and you can even look this up, that the Bible has never been proven wrong....only right. Jesus took it as the word of God and literal, so I will go with Him there too.

Hmmmm... Well, when Prophets of Jesus Christ start talking.. I take it literal.. even if it did not get written down right away because they were illiterate or whatever reason.. even if it did not get recorded just exactly right for some reason or another.. even if it has been translated a tiny bit wrong here or there...
it STILL contains the Word of God and Jesus testified that it was true.. also, it is talked about in the Book of Mormon which was written by Prophets in the Americas from about 400 BC to 400 AD (I forget the timeframe.. could be larger)

For me, when I say I take the Bible literally, I mean that I am not open to any interpretation of the Bible that cannot be supported by the ENTIRE Bible. When an interpretation leaves room for conflicting verses, or what I would consider negating verses, I assume the interpretation to be wrong. I simply abhor instances of pulling verses out of the Bible and making them support a particular, man-made meaning. Parables cannot be taken literally, of course; but Jesus often explains the meaning of His parable to the disciples and He never said anything that conflicts with the Word of God. He is the Word of God and cannot conflict Himself. So, literally to me is that any and all beliefs about the words of the Bible are supported by the Entire Bible... they are not the interpretation of human thoughts and motives.

Because of people like you, dude. The more you say it's all false the more they have to say it's all true. If you ever tried to meet them halfway, you might get somewhere. You are building a wall when you could build a bridge. It is just as simple-minded to say that NONE of it is true as to say that ALL of it is true. How about a little bit of moderation, Bro?
While you are doing your wholesale dismissal of everything in the Bible, please be aware that you are dismissing a few things like this:
God is love.
It is wrong to kill or steal.
Love is patient and kind.
Blessed are the peacemakers.
...these and many more!
I left traditional religion behind MANY years ago and I left extremism along with it. The hardest thing has been for me to recognize that even though some piece of writing might not have the WHOLE truth in it, a little bit of truth is better than none.
People take the Bible as !00% literal truth because it isn't !00% untrue and people haven't learned how not to be extremists.

Why do you think your sources are unbiased?
Why do you underestimate the accuracy of oral traditions of ancient cultures?
If people spent as much time contemplating scripture as they do the meaning of their favorite song lyrics or the outcome of the latest reality TV show, they might actually understand the stories in the Bible.

Not everyone will believe the Bible. Maybe you will be one of those who find out too late that every word is very true. Try to read it with the unbias you talk about and see what happens.

The Bible is a historical book that has been proven over and over. Have you ever read it or are you just making a judgement on a book based on what others have said. I challenge you to read it through...starting in Matthew.... and after you read it ALL, then come back and ask again... Get a Bible dictionariy so you can check things out you don't understand...

God used a lot of metaphors and fables to explain how we should act and make it simpler to understand. That's all, oh, and it is true by the way, why don't you read it? : )
