A huge box of the large legos!!!!! Or a small riding toy, my one year old LOVES his riding toy, his sister did too when she was her age...it's a little push along toy that converts into a little car once they get older....I think it was $15 at Target and it's survived 3 kids!

A couple of suggestions are:
1. A plate, bowl, spoon, and cup set. These are the cutest and they usually come in an assortment of characters like Princess, Strawberry Shortcake, and Dora. Plus a one year old is learning to eat on their own so this would be Perfect!
2. A nice pajama set with a stuff animal or baby doll. I gave this to my niece and she adored the baby doll. She is three and still uses it.
3. Maybe her first cute tennis shoes (Nike or some brand like that) now that she's walking!
Good Luck!

Well, if you are the parent (and a first-time parent), I guess a colourful clothe book, a big party, a big soft toy and piles of pretty dresses would be what you will eventually get.
If you are just a well-meaning relative or close friend of the parents, or just someone who has to get a gift for someone's year-old daughter, clothes will be good, but that's everybody's choice. I prefer to buy clothes at least a size bigger for toddlers and babies cos they outgrow very fast. If the clothes are not for daily wear, but something more elaborate, all the more you should buy a size bigger.
If you are looking for toys, please don't get those furry types. Babies are get allergies quite easily (or at least my kids do).
Else, get a teething ring, a set of bed sheets for the cot, plastic drinking cup, plate and cutlery, or maybe an Elmo vcd?

a ride on toy would be nice
playsilks - my one year old loves these, and they can be played with for years, they are always a great thing for children http://www.atoygarden.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=68
wooden blocks
stacking toys, or nesting toys
waldorf style dolls http://www.joyswaldorfdolls.com/
puppets http://www.folkmanis.com/
toys that light up and play music are not great - they teach kids that toys have to 'do' something instead of teaching them to use their imagination! And plastic is unhealthy!! Wood, cotton, silk and wool are much better toy materials. They also last longer, and can be passed down many times.

what ever she seems to like. if she likes barney then buy a barney doll or something like that.
when my great-niece turned one she loved tigger. i got her a tigger dolls and the tigger movie. she will sit on the floor and watch that video all the time.
if you are unsure what she likes get her some toy that lights up and plays music. i never seen a baby who didn't love them kind of toys.
hope this helps you.

children this age will be learning to walk, you can get her a push and pull toy to encourage walking...
There are also a lot of nice clothes for little girls as well you can consider....
Books, or toys are another worthwhile investment.

Books! :) A few nice board books for now, and possibly a "classic" or favorite from your childhood.
