The advantages out-weigh the disadvantages in a tremendous way. Really, there are NO dis-advantages to not altering your dog, be it male or female. Your dog will not gain weight. There is no proof of this. If you choose not to exercise your dog adequately, then, yes, any dog will gain excess pounds. I believe there ought to be a law requiring all dog owners to spay or neuter all of their pets, unless that dog is registered with the AKC as a qualified breeder. Same goes for cats. Please visit any shelter or rescue group and you will understand why there is no need for any more pups or kittens in this world. Altering your dog reduces energy a bit, relieves tensions and anxieties, can aide in training, and relieves aggression in, particularly, male dogs. The procedure is totally safe and takes less than an hour, and your dog can go home the same night. There is no excuse for NOT altering your dog or cat. If you do not, you are just asking for an un-wanted litter. And if you purposefully breed two dogs together for no warranted reason, you are only contributing to the insanely over-populated shelters of unwanted pups.
Hope this influences your decision.

The only disadvantage I noted was that my lab did not have the peppiness in his attitude that he had before but he regained that and was always loveable. He still continued to be the caretaker of our home. He recently passed away after living 15+ years.
The advantage is that he no longer climbed the fence to search for his newest heart throb. He was a happier and healthier dog for it, but that is up to the owner. It was a hard decision for me to make but I did it for his health more than anything and he was stolen from me once and I was blessed enough to have found him. He went 40 miles to another city and I will never know why that occurred. After that, is when he was neutered. Good luck with your decision, whatever it is.

The two main reasons to spay or neuter any pet is:
1. No unwanted puppies or kittens to contribute to the overpopulation problem. Millions of unwanted animals are euthanized every year, I'll never contribute to that!
2. The earlier that they are spayed/neutered, the less their chances of getting cancers of the reproductive system. You will have a much happier, healthier pet if you spay or neuter them.
It is a myth that this will change their personality and cause them to become fat and lazy! Anyone who still believes that should come volunteer at my shelter. All of my animals have been "fixed" and most of them are still extremely hyper.

Male Dogs
Advantages:
Reduced desire to run away and chase after female dogs, especially when the females are in heat and less chance of becoming lost or injured in search of a mate
Reduced aggression to other dogs (especially other male dogs), thus saving themselves much pain and their owners high veterinary bills
Reduced aggression to people
Reduced incidence of diseases of the prostate, which includes very malignant cancers
Reduced incidence of cancer of the testes
Reduced incidence of unwanted sexual behaviour, such as mounting cushions, peoples legs, or children
The dogs personality will not change
Less distracted by sexual instincts
More responsive to family members
Cheaper to register with the local city council
Disadvantes:
Wont be able to father any puppies
Has to undergo a general anaesthetic for the surgery
The dog may miss sex, but neutered dogs don’t show interest in sex
Female Dogs
Disadvantages:
Wont be able to produce any puppies
Has to undergo a general anaesthetic for the surgery
Advantages:
Prevent the dog coming into heat every 5-8 months
Won’t produce the bloody vaginal discharge that occurs in every heat, which will stain carpets and furniture
No chance of getting pregnant and won’t be able to produce puppies
No chance of developing false pregnancies (a psychological form of pregnancy)
Won’t attract all the neighbourhood male dogs around to visit when in heat
Won’t have to be confined to prevent her running away
Reduced incidence of mammary cancer (the incidence increases with each successive heat, starting at 10-20% risk after the second heat)
Reduced incidence of uterine infections which can be life threatening
Reduced costs because dogs eat more both when pregnant and after offspring are born and health care for pregnant females is expensive
Raising puppies is also expensive, and time-consuming, to feed, worm, vaccinate, advertise and place them into homes.

Diadvantegs: Unless he is an AKC Champion with impeccable OFA xrays for hips & elbows, perfect on the CERF eye and passes every other health check so that he is a primecandidate to perpetuate the breed the answer is
NONE NONE NONE
Advantages: Less or no marking
Less aggression towards other males
No trying to escapeto chase a ***** in heat
No prostate or testicular CANCER - a very, very
high risk in an unneutered male

The advantages? Take a day and visit shelters. See how many dogs are unwanted and are going to be euthanized. The thing with breeding too.....it should ONLY be done if it is going to improve the breed in some way. If your dog isn't a championship dog then he has no business mating.

people neuter there dogs so they do not have to worry about puppy's. If your dog gets loose and gets a dog pregnant or if your dog gets pregnant by another male, people get angry sometimes and if you don't want puppies you shoud always fix your dog male or female. If you plan on breeding dogs you don't want some mut getting your dog pregnant or it is hard to get rid of the puppies (although I find that muts sometimes are the most interesting dogs)usually leading to termination of the animal. I think it is a very wise thing to do for people who do not want to deal with puppies period.

Advantage - no unwanted babies, reduced rate of cancer, calmer demeanor . Male animals, much less humping. For female animals, no more bleeding on the carpet. Disadvantage - your pet will get fatter, will be in pain for a week or 2.

Advantages are no unwanted puppies - there are enough out there now. They are calmer, do not want to roam the neighborhood and in general make better companions if they are neutered.

I would spay and or neuter all of my pets.
There are no disadvantages to sterilization that matter.
The greatest advantage is preventing the euthanasia of more unwanted pets for generations to come.
