Was there anything special you did with your mother? Definitely take your time in choosing, this will be a very special tattoo.
For my great-grandmother, I plan on getting her favorite flower, a calla lily, tattooed, probably on my leg. I think tattoos are a great way to remember someone you loved.

Honestly, it's a pretty lame and cliche idea. There are so many other visual metaphors for what you're talking about. Find a good, solid tattoo shop in your area and pick out the very best artist you can find. Not just a good tattooer, but someone with an artistic eye and great body of work. Discuss your idea with him/her and all of the elements you'd like to include. They'll be able to come up with something for you that will exceed your expectations. It'll be worth it, too. Custom pieces look better and have originality. Be prepared to pay a lot for it, though.

Was your mother into tattoo's?
How old are you?
If you're a female, you need to be aware that your tattoo will change shape as you do, & will blur a bit over time and weight changes, so think about where you'll have your tattoo.
My recommendation is to wait until you really know what you want.
It took me 20 years to get my tattoo, because it took me that long to know what was right for me, rather than being influenced by fashions.

I'm terribly sorry. My second tattoos were in memory of my late mother in law. Her name was Robin, so I designed pretty Robins for her and that was the start of my love themed Chestpiece.
Go with something that symbolizes her. Something that she loved, something that when you/people that knew her see it, they'll know it's for her.
Just don't get her name, date of birth/death, and/or RIP. That sucks. I hate doing "grave marker" tattoos. If you think it would fit "mom" or her first or middle name in a banner in the design or something's better than just grave stone, you know...
If you don't know what to get, just design stuff for a while, wait a while 6 months to a year and then see if you still are interested. There's no rush, you have the rest of your life to get one.
Good Luck!

If you are certain that's what you want to do, how about intertwining the japanese mother-daughter symbol? I find them interesting, tasteful, and they don't ever look "cheesy" like a wolf in a moon holding a rose in its mouth...ya know?..lol. Not to poke fun, but people can get some wacky ideas! I found some great sites online that'll give you the info. you need to make a well informed decision, all you have to do is type in search "symbols for mother-daughter" Best of luck to you in your quest, and my heart goes out to you in losing your mom. Take care hon. It's your memory, you should carry it any way YOU want to, be it in your mind, videos, pictures, OR on your body.

When my father died I designed my own tattoo. I chose his zodiac sign intertwined with a rose with his name underneath. I aslo did not want a huge "cheesy" tat with a huge cross and R.I.P written on my body. Your best bet is to think maybe of a special moment or a special something between you and your mother and go from there. Be creative and make it personal and have it tell a story. So instead of just saying I got a tat for my mom you can tell a story when people ask you and remember your dear mother all over again.

What "thing" can you associate with your Mom?
Think of the one thing that reminds you most of your Mom and work with that. Did she like pets, was there a song that was special to the both of you, whatever "IT" is work on creating a tattoo that incorporates it into the tattoo. Good Luck & My sincerest condolences to you and your family. I can't image life without my Mom or Dad but God forbid if they should pass I will be getting memorial tatto's for both them.

It should be something that you will be happy with, and that your mother would have approved of. Personally, I would get her zodiac sign tattooed above the one I'm getting of mine. I'm planning a type of family tree represented all with zodiac signs. (my parents, then siblings & mine below it, attached to my husbands, and our children's below ours) Make sure that it means something to you. I have been planning my tattoos for the last five years, and still have not gotten it. Placement is also key, as everyone's body changes throughout their life.
