I have 2 cats. I do not have close family in the same city, and I do not have friends who are close enough for me to ask such a favour.

I have been thinking a lot lately about accidents and came up with some "what if" questions.
What if I was in the hospital? Is there a service where they can visit your home to care for pets?
What if I was unconscious for a few days and not able to arrange for anyone to feed my cats and clean their litter?
What if I suddenly died?

Does anyone have somethign organised for their pets?

RSPCA have a program that is like private health cover but for pets. You pay about $30-$45 a month and it covers them for injuries, general check-ups and even if you have to go to hospital.

If you don't want to go that way, either your vet or animal league will look after them if something happens.

It is very good of you to think ahead like that about your cats if the case ever did rise up.

I have in my address book the phone number to my vets. The girls at the desk would recommend you to a cat sitting service that you can call and check if they would do something like that.

I was in a two car accident and had to remain in the hospital for a week, I called the cat sitting service, told them what happened and they came by my hospital room and took my spare key to my home and sat with my cats till I came home the following week. Since this was an emergency case they had to charge me $25 more than the normal fee but it was worth it since my cats are my children and even though they had plenty of food and water, I worried about them even while I was in the hospital.

Try calling your vets and asking them for a reputable cat sitting service that they would put their own cats with if they got into an accident. They will not lead you wrong.

There are companies you can call that will take care of your animals when you're away on a trip, or in an accident.

Check with a pet store or your vet if you have one. They may have flyers for such companies.

If you died without having someone to care for them than they would go to a shelter to be adopted more than likely.

Hi there...it's good to create a contigency plan if in the event something does happen which puts your pets in need of care. Most people contact vets and local shelters to ask who in their area can help for the care of the animals should you become ill and hospitalized. If you should pass away, the next of kin generally will have to decide what happens to your pets so it would be best to discuss this with them in advance so they best fulfill your wishes.

We have to create these plans for the rescued exotic cats in our care as this is necessary so that their lives are not abruptly ended due to lack of planning on our part.

I know that the SPCA has a card that you can keep in your wallet and a sticker for your windows that says you have animals in your home that need care, that way even if you don't have close family or friends, someone can make arrangements. I got the stickers and cards for free for signing up with the SPCA at their website.
