dogs don't really get periods, they go into heat. humans and the great apes are the only animals that get periods. granted there is some bleeding during a dogs heat cycle, but biologically its not a period.

Dogs do not have periods - they have heat cycles - and this can start anywhere between 5 and 12 months depending on the breed and size of your dog. The amount of bleeding varies from dog to dog - some have barely any and others are like the proverbial stuck pig! Many vets are now recommending that you allow a dog to reach its full adult growth before neuter surgery. BUT you must ensure that she does not breed.

Dogs come on season at varying different ages.I have had dogs come on season at 6 months and others that haven't come on season for the first time until they were 3.So it will be vary hard to tell from when she came on season as to how old she is.But I have found a general rule of thumb would be between 12-18 months.
How though do you know that her first season was a month after you found her?She could have had a season 6 months or 12 months prior to you finding her.

Since you found her, you have no way of knowing if that was her first "heat cycle", not "period". A dog can come in heat as early as 5 months and as late as 18 months for their first time. A vet can tell you approximately how old your dog is.

depends a lot on the breed, but most females begin their heat cycle as early as 5 months old. some will have several cycles a year, some only one cycle a year. 5 months is a good age to spay- fyi

they usually start their first heat when they are between the ages of 6-8 months. but it is hard to tell what age she is because you found her and not from a breder or the shelter. the best thing to do is to take her to the vet because they will be able to determine what age she might be. but when dogs go into heat they are about 6-8 months. my best advice is to take her to the vet and they will let you know and let you know around about what age she is. good luck.

I rescued a shepherd mix from the SPCA. She was 2 years old and had just given birth to a litter of puppies. growing up, we always had male dogs. I wasn't ready for a female in heat. It was a messy and horrible as you think it would be. After her first heat, I got her spayed right away. Just do it... it's better for you, your dog, and your carpeting!

Anytime between 6-9 months, but some as early as 4 months. You can look at her teeth if she will let you to determine age. If she has all of her large adult teeth, she is about 7 months old. If she still has small puppy canine teeth, but large front teeth, she is about 5-6 months old.
