I am running windows xp. I tried doing a defrag and it wouldn't let me defrag a couple files so I figured they were bad so I tried doing a scan on the C: drive. When I did this it asked me if I wanted to do the scan on restart and I clicked yes. So I restarted and on startup it started messing up it would ask me if I want to go into safe mode or go back to an earlier point when its working I tried both and xp still wouldn't load up so finally with a little messing around in the f8 area I got it past that point and it did the scan and it didn't find anything. I did another defrag and I still had the same problem but it loads up ok now any ideas on what to do?

First, Turn off the system restore to delete any corrupt restores and turn it back on. Next download a free antivirus program and do a full system scan to double check that all remnants of viruses and trojans are gone. Then do a Disk Check (open my computer and right click on main drive, click properties, then tools tab and click to check the volume for errors, next check both boxes, click start and select yes on next window, restart computer and wait for WINDOWS to check the files) Most problems are fixed this way. When your computer reboots and you logon- then do the DEFRAG. The mystery files are probably virus leftovers which is why WINDOWS cannot move them for defrag. Don't forget to check microsoft.com for solutions as well.
I hope this helps :)
Also go to www.pcpitstop.com and sign up to do a pc scan, its free and they give you suggestions, instructions and advice to make your pc run better with better security. This has been a huge help to me and after doing the suggested changes I now get a clean check from them.

I would suggest.. That you do a Disk cleanup first.... be sure all the boxes are checked... Then do a defrag be sure you are defragging the C drive as that usually is the main harddrive.
If that doesnt help then I would do a system restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Only go back one checkpoint at a time until things are cleared up.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, there is a hardware problem. Most of these problems can be solved by just opening up the computer and removing the dust. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yd34oj
