[Multiply by a] a^2 = ab
[Subtract b^2] a^2 - b^2 = ab - b^2
[Factor] (a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
[Divide (a - b)] (a + b) = b
[Substitute the given] a + a = a
[Let a=1, therefore] 1 + 1 = 1
And of course, the error is in the fifth step. You can't really divide by (a-b) because (a-b) is zero and you can't divide by zero.
