Our german shepherd used to do this, until we started getting serious with her training.
We could NOT let her roam free or use a long leash. When outside, she was on a SHORT leash right beside me or my husband. Even for a pee in the backyard!! Her head/nose/mouth was NOT allowed to reach the ground at all. As soon as she seemed interested in a clump of grass or chunk of dirt, we'd do a QUICK fast turn and walk away from the distraction. We did NOT let her off leash at all. She wasn't allowed to have a free run until she was much older...and understood what the training was all about.
Even now, when we walk her, we need to be careful and always make sure we know what she's doing. Best way to do that? A short leash.
Our golden retriever never ever did this, so it's just a matter of 'some dogs, do, some don't'
Bottom line, your dog will chew and eat whatever YOU LET IT EAT !!! Be attentive and consistent. This will take you weeks, or it might take you months. Depends on how serious you want to be.
Best of Luck

he might have a condition called "PICA". Dogs...and humans...eats weird things like clay, dirt, and anything else that has lots of minerals in it and isn't usually eaten. Grass is normal for dogs, but anything else is odd for your shih tzu... String is dangerous for your dog. It can cause a bowel intesusseption. which is one part of the intestine telescoping into another part. it basically is one part sucking another part of the intestine into it, causing a blockage and parts of the intestine to die. Try as hard as possible to dog proof your home so he won't eat anything else. Try putting bitter apple on somke of the grass and feeding it to him. do this a few times and he should start to learn that its gross. Goodluck!

I think he's related to my Boston Terrier. But seriously, we have had all kinds of problems with her eating everything...marbles, the carpet, dead weeds from the yard, my kids' toys. You name it. If it fits in her mouth, she's tried to eat it. We've actually discouraged her some by keeping a wide variety of bones and chew toys available. Every time we see her with something she shouldn't have, we take it from her, give her a firm "NO" and give her something proper that she can chew on. She still has her moments, but it really has helped.

She might have a delicate abdomen dissatisfied. Grass helps calm their stomachs, yet whilst she eats too lots, she may be doing this TO throw up. My challenge isn't eating for 3 days. i could call the vet in case you may no longer get her to consume something - like say - canned canine nutrition? What are you doing to handle her for worms? confirm and tell your vet of this. I continually have my vet try this!!!

Dogs eat anything and everything they can get their mouth on. My suggestion is have something to replace what your taking out of their mouth, like a rawhide. When they have something they shouldn't have, take it away and then give them the rawhide or a toy or something. It keeps them busy, they like it, and that is something they Can eat.

Try hot sauce on something he repeatedly eats. They say it is caused from a mineral deficiency, try some pet vitamins, PET TABS.

You really should spend more time with it b/c they need alot of attention but also if that doesnt work then try taking him to a shelter that trains dogs.

he may need to see the vet. it is possible that he is lacking a specific vitamin or mineral from his diet that causes him to eat odd things.
