Well, if the cat has rabies then the cat would been drooling and acting disturb. But if the cat don't have rabies, then you should try feeding the cat everyday until you feel that it got use to you. Then you could wait until it finish eating and pet the cat on the head.
And as for the cat being a female or male, that is easy to find out. If you see the testicles between the legs, then the cat is a male. But if it is a female, the cat would have two black dots on top of each other between the legs. There should also be some space between the dots when you tried to look for them.
To found out the cat is pregnant, you just need to place your hand on the stomach while the cat is lying down. Then you need to either rub or spread your fingers on the stomach until you feel some movements. That tells you the babies are moving around in the stomach.
I hope these answer help you.

I agree with those who have suggested putting up flyers in the area. I also recommend dropping by your vet's office or an area shelter with the cat so they can scan for a micro chip. If one is present, they'll be able to trace the cat back to the owners. Checking with neighbors within about a two block radius is a good idea too. I would exhaust all possibilities to find the owner before taking ownership. If nobody surfaces, take the cat to a vet to be checked out, vaccinated and spayed/neutered if it hasn't already been done.

I think it's highly unlikely it will scratch given the fact it wasn't scared to come near you. I've helped a lot of strays and you really have to p*ss them off for them to scratch. The cat would be more likely to run off then scratch you.
As for what to do with it, well since it might be pregnant you'll probably want to drop it off at a vets office or the shelter. A pregnant cat is a lot to take care of, at least when the babies are born.

My aunt had something like this happen to her. What she did was she went to pet it. It snapped at her the first time, but the cat kept returning to her house. Soon after, it allowed her to be pet, and she has been living with my aunt ever since. What i would do is,if she lets you pet her, don't keep petting her, she might be sick. If she keeps returning, and seeming to like you, take her to the vet. See if she is pregnant, and, (, did you check if she had any tags on? I guess you already did.) I'd put signs up, if nobody responds then (if you want to) get all the shots needed for her, and take her into your home. I bet your other cat would love having a playmate.

I say, good for you. Put out enough dry food for both of the cats, as it looks like you have been adopted, my friend, by that cat.
Try petting the cat while it's eating. If she or he allows you to pet him or her. Try picking the cat up into your arms and check the butt to find if she is a she or a he. The cat would probably try not to be checked but try as much as you can.
If you can, catch it and put it in a cat carrier and take her or him to the vet and see about her or his health. If she's not pregnant, get her spayed or if he's a he, get him neutered and keep her/him as she/he sounds like a great cat to be with.
And congrats on being adopted by the cat. You may be this cat's best chance at a good family home.

Oh, please don't turn her away. Stray cats can be so loving because you saved them from harm and hunger. I had an experience that will never leave me. I was going to work and there was this pretty tabby cat half lying half sitting in the middle of the road in a pool of blood. It was panting in pain and people would go around her and leave her there to suffer. I picked her up and bundled her into my car and took her to the vet. Well, she had some severe injuries. When I stopped by the next morning she was still alive but he said she had a head injury. Would I like to put her to sleep or give her one more day. I chose to give her one more day and for him to keep her out of pain. I named her Samantha The next day, he called and asked me if I would like to come and take Samantha home. She had made it through the night but she was still fragile. I took her home and nursed her back to health and she was so loving. But I had to give her up to a neighbor because I had 4 cats and that was all I could take.
I still see Samantha and she comes running to me and loves on me. She knew I saved her life. I think. Just be kind and gentle to her and she will return the kindness, I hope.
That's good to Ellen, good answer.

First spend a day or two cultivating some trust. Talk to her and eventually pet her. Call your vet and bring her for a checkup. I took in a young female who was a little chubby and was surprized to find out she was neutered, She is socialized so that is pretty easy. Pregnet or not take care of her and love her. My little one I took in last year is a joy plays well with others and loves to cuddle. Have fun!

You know my friend and I were in that exact same situation...so we were carrying the cat and out of no where it started freaking out and scratching
LUCKILY it didn't have any diseases so she didn't die but we ended up getting a blanket for that cat and wrapping it up in it.
we carried it home
I'm not saying to keep the cat, but maybe take it to the vet to check if it is pregnant
then keep it until it has its babies
give the kittens away and then maybe keep the stray cat or give it away to someone else who might want to take care of it.

Just pet her a little and use your instinct to see if she'll let you pick her up. If you're worried about a cat scratch wear some long sleeves and gloves or something.

She probably is. My guess would be that she's pregnant and her owners ditched her instead of dealing with it. This is sort of how I got my cat. Take her to the vet and see if they can tell. Unfortunately my vet told me she wasn't but found out otherwise when fixing her. They aborted her kittens.
