Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulations on completing the first week - you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

If you really want to quit, if you want to be a non-smoker more than you want a cig temporarily when the pressure is on..,it is possible to stop and never start again. You MUST be determined. Hear about those people that quit 'cold turkey'? Does it make you wonder what it would be like to be that strong? Imagine yourself as a non-smoker, with all the attendant benefits. You will not smell like an ashtray and whoever you kiss will love it. You will have more money in your pocket for ___? You will not have to think about it before you go to bed. You will not have to think about it when you wake up in the morning. The other people in your life, especially the children, will be healthier. YOU will get healthier. You will be more productive at work.........Write down the things that really mean something to you. Make up a couple mantras you can repeat to yourself when you need it. I lost my mother to lung cancer so I had a big motivation to live more than 20 years. Make a prop you can keep your hands busy with. Pick a day and stick to it. Drink lots of water. Stay away from triggers like the bar or friends for a few days/weeks. If you really are fed up with cigarettes and can make it three days without one your body will immediately start to mend and the smell will repulse you. Go with that feeling and be strong. Keep yourself busy with anything (read, go out, work..etc)
and at the same time, buy a really bad flavoured gum, and everytime you feel like smoking, have two or three...and every once and a while, change the gum type, so yo u dnt get used to it
note: stay away from people while they smoke, and always think "i'll do it"

What did it for me was thinking about my kids (5 & 6) crying that they miss mommy and my husband having to explain why they will never see her again....seriously, I felt that bad. I knew I had to do something...every craving is about 10 minutes...just make it through that 10 minutes by not picking one up.....then do the same for the next one. I also drink coffee when I get my cravings, which I still do a year and a half later, but what keeps me going is that I don't want to go through the pain of having to quit again....it's tooo hard.

Cold turkey and the nicorette gum. Whenever you feeel the urge to smoke pop in a peice. In between I suck on fire jolly ranchers. That helps me a lot because when I am stressed, I chew on them.

anytime i have a bad habit to break i just take it out by having sex...everytime I have the erge. That way I get to release my frustration and my man is smiling too.

Stay away from people that smoke. Also try smoking a pretzel stick it lights up and smokes just like a cig. Good luck!
