Maybe all this "cleaning and washing" is just making it worse. Has there been a study that proves soap actually is necessary? After all, before soap was invented, people never cleaned themselves, and acne isn't caused by poor hygiene anyway.

Every time you clean your face, new oil appears, just like a car, it can't run with old used oil, right?

If you don't clean your face the bacteria will grow and your skin will get much worse. Buuut, if you wash it too much your skin is unprotected and becomes sensitive, so you have to just keep it clean, don't overwash it. And acne is cause by poor hygiene, my sister is a dermotologist if you don't believe me.

As a tip, here are some ways to greatly improve your skin.
Take zinc, vitamin c with bioflavanoids (lots of it), and pantothenic acid (same thing as vitamin b5 i think). If you want to know how to totally clean your skin naturally, here is what I did, and it worked like you wouldn't believe. I read this free guide, and followed it in detail. Now, this is a totally free guide, they don't try to sell a thing, and I am not affiliated.

Neutrogena made me break out more often. I noticed it within the past year or so (I'm 24.) I started using Cetaphil, a gentle cleanser (and there are generics available). It has no dyes or scents and simply cleans your face without stripping your face of all oils. When you do strip your face of oils, it causes you to increase oil production, which leads to clogged pores, which leads to huge zits. Neutrogena works for a while, but I find that after a while, it becomes irritating to the skin and causes more zits than it remedies. I also use an exfoliating pad/sponge to wash my face with the cetaphil. It takes away some of the dead skin cells and dirt, the other components of clogged pores.

yes and no .

acne is not caused by a dirty face or even oily skin. trust me i know. "washing" as in, just scrubbing your face with water and soap won't clear up acne and yes it can make it ten times worse.

acne soaps do more than just clean your face though, they penetrate deep into pores where they dry to burn off (not like fire burn) pimples/zits. the fact that acne medications clean your face doesnt do much except make your face look cleaner and/or smell better.

acne on its own will actually go away eventually as you grow older (your reference to before soap). so im sure back then they just grew out of it.

hope i helped.

No it would not clear up....it would get worse.
Acne can be caused by too much oil in your skin, allergies, environment, or the type of soap you use.
I have always used Noxema and it works great on me. Some swear by Avon or Mary Kay....both of which broke me out.
If I don't have Noxema, then I use Tone, Caress or Ivory soap. Try not to use deodorant soap on your skin.
You don't have to spend a crap load on skin products. That designer stuff isn't worth it.
Or you may want to go to a dermatologist.

There were four kids in my family. We who did not do anything out of the ordinary as far as washing our face did not break out. Then there is my one sister lol! She used all sorts of crap on her face and broke out like there is no tomorrow.

Good way of selling face creams and everything else out on the market though hu? Millions of bucks being made by those companies. I guess they would not make much money if they told people if they ate right and if they had hereditary on there side they would not have to buy there product lol!

I no maybe one of these companies will contact you with a big check made out in your name so you do not tell anyone else about your thoughts on this subject :0)

Good Hygeine is essential. You should clean your whole body, including your face. It can only help. Some people have severe acne that no amount of washing will take care of. There are some strong medications that doctors can prescibe in those cases if they feel it is prudent. Check out: www.webmd.com for more information. Good Luck ! :)

I think there's something to this...
I had moderate acne since I was a teen 'til I was mid 30-something. I tried everything. I finally stopped wearing makeup (moving from L.A. was helpful!) and stopped washing, using astringents, picking - all that stuff. I only 'wash' with water and sometimes baby soap. I haven't had a breakout ever since. It's been years. I suppose everybody's different, but it couldn't hurt to try it yourself.
