Anyone out there an avid runner that knows how to build your run? I use a treadmill and can only jog for a period of 1 minute before having to rest. HELP!

I am an avid runner have run 4 marathons doing my 5th in january. Although i am an avid runner I still need to give my body breaks after running sometimes. My idea for you is to start walks then build up each week. For instance the first week walk for 30 minutes non stop, it helps to walk in scenic areas makes the time pass faster and lets your mind wander and not think about how long you have walked/run or if you have little pains. Then the next week walk for 45 minutes, increasing your time by 15 minutes. The next week walk everyday for an hour. At this point the next week try a slow shuffle jog where you drag your feet for about 5 minutes if you feel your self start to get winded walk and after you have completed your 5 minutes of shuffle jog walk for another 30 minutes. Keep increasing your time every week for running by 5 minutes. Remember to be doing this everyday or at 4 days per week. If you do it once a week your body will not get used to it! Do not push yourself too fast! It will not work and you will feel like you are failing. You need to give your time to get used to the gradual increase. good luck!

p.s. maybe the problem with the treadmill is that it is going to fast! most of them read in miles. For example if you are running at 5 miles per hour you are running an 11 minute mile. That seems very slow but if you are planning to run an extensive period of time it is actually pretty fast. Anymore question dont hesitate to drop me a line. Running is my passion

Get off the treadmill hit the trails.I perfer to run on trails than roads. There is a lot less impact on the joints if you can run on dirt, gravel roads, trails,or fields. But if your planning to run road races hit the road hard.Start at a mile if you can and push yourself to doing more.I normally run 40 miles a week and I'm 30.I ran more when I was in school participating in crosscountry.Hills are the best!

You should try doing interval training. It is the workout where you do a combination of walking and running. It helps you build up to run. Here is a link for a workout plan to start out

It gradually helps you build up to running all the time.

If you are talking long distance running, you should have started several years ago. Two months on a treadmill is poor conditioning for distance running.
