Malaria is a deadly VIRUS not diease. It is transfered by mosquitos like you say and is not a recuring illness. If it is treated your imune system should prevent it from reacuring unless you suffer from a DIEASE like aids that weakens the imune system.

A disease is the result of an infection. if you break the word down dis-ease it means that a person is not at ease, usually from an infection.
Malaria is an infection that is transmitted to humans from mosquitoes. It can make many people very sick, but some can carry it without any symptoms (or disease). Malaria leads to a high fever and a few other symptoms that can lead to death. People can also recover from malaria and carry on their lives.
There are also different strains of malaria and some are worse than others. To determine if a person is infected with malaria a blood sample is taken and you can see the bacteria in the blood, it usually has a face in it (kind of like the man in the moon).
So to sum it up, malaria IS a disease and is one of the leading infectious disease killers in the world and the world must unite to help ease the burden of this disease in developing countries.

Malaria is a disease, carried by mosquitos.
Check out the link below for a lot more info.
An interesting bit of info is that malaria was mostly defeated back in the 60's with widespread use of DDT. DDT was unjustly banned in 1972, and since then many millions of people in poorer countries have needlessly died from malaria.
This is one of the most shameful incidents of shoddy environmental science that is responsible for killing people on an enormous scale. DDT is now being allowed again to fight this scourge. I've included 3 links about DDT below too.

Malaria: Topic Home
Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die. Each year 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, and over one million people die, most of them young children in sub-Saharan Africa.
This sometimes fatal disease can be prevented and cured. Bednets, insecticides, and antimalarial drugs are effective tools to fight malaria in areas where it is transmitted. Travelers to a malaria-risk area should avoid mosquito bites and take a preventive antimalarial drug.

Yes it is a disease
FAQ's: What Causes Malaria?
Malaria is caused by four species of parasitic protozoa that infect human red blood cells. Protozoa are one-celled organisms that are as sophisticated as a human cell. Malaria parasites feed on red blood cells for a living but .
Plasmodium falciparum
Plasmodium vivax
Plasmodium malariae
Plasmodium ovale
Malaria parasites have a complex life cycle. In order to live, they need to have both a human and a mosquito host.
The mosquito host can't be just "any" mosquito. It has to be a mosquito of the genus Anopheles.
The mosquito picks up the malaria parasites from the blood of an infected human when it feeds.
The malaria parasite reproduces itself in the gut of the Anopheles mosquito. The malaria parasites need the mosquito to continue their life cycle. Then, the mosquito passes the malaria parasites to the human through its salivary glands.
The four different species of malaria parasites cause types of malaria that are somewhat different from each other.
The worst type is caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Infection with Plasmodium falciparum kills approximately 1-2% of those who come down with it. Falciparum malaria is a serious illness characterized by fever, headache, and weakness.

Rather than argue with him about what he learned in school, ask him to tell you all about it. Enhance his learning.
To answer your question. It is a parasitic infection that is mediated by a mosquito.
And yes, it is a disease. Your cousin is right. Now let him tell you all about what he learned in school.
