there are so many things that are band from use but the two things that help you kill yourself are not! how is this possible? is it because the government wants the money? possibly...and no offense to anyone that does any of those things but would you still have the same outlook on the situation if one of your loved ones died in a car accident from someone that was drunk? or maybe your mother or sister or brother died of lung cancer? maybe then your opinion would change. smoking not only harms you, but also others around you. its called second hand smoke. and people die from your smoke everyday. its very selfish in my opinion. harm yourself if you really have to but dont do it to others! i mean really..why is it so fun to go to partys and drink so much that all you do is throw up everything you had in the past week. how is getting emphazima fun?? being barely able to walk across from room to room? i bet when you get lung cancer or your liver shuts down you wont think its so fun anymore

Smokers not only have suicidal issues...they are murderers...why am i being so drastic? Well if we think about the end result...they are pretty much selfishly taking away my choice to live. Your right some of you...kill yourself if you must but how DARE you decide wether i should live or die...eventually from your stinking habits..

Guess im really angry....BAN IT I SAY!

My question is...where should it stop? Ban smoking because people have a right to NOT breathe the second hand smoke of smokers. What about drinking? There are laws about drinking and driving, but who watches? As a former bartender, I wish I had a nickel for every mom and dad I saw drink during dinner then get in the car with the kids to drive home. Don't those kids have a right to be driven home by a parent with NO alcohol in their system? Don't the other drivers on the road have a right to drive without the wonder of what the other drivers are on?
What about using cell phones while driving? Eating and drinking while driving? Some cities are banning this too.
Everyone has a right to live their life as they choose. But we are inviting BIG BROTHER in to monitor, police, prohibit more and more every day.
I live in a city that banned smoking in restaurants, unless the owners installed an air purifier, filtration system and furnished a separate room for smokers. A year later, now they are saying no to smoking all together. Those restauranteurs may or may not be reimbursed for the money they spent. Pretty soon we will all be told when, where, what, how we eat, drink, drive, talk, breathe, what medications we can take, what doctors we can see, etc. etc.etc. etc.

They should never be outlawed. You have read about the Prohibition era in America, and all the crime during that decade? Banning the sale of tobacco or alcohol products would cause considerably more problems than it would solve.

Also, not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. My friend's great-grandfather lived to 106, and he smoked for close to 70 years. However, he never smoked more than two packs a week.

If you think that the government should ban products that "help you kill yourself," then why don't they ban firearms, knives, toxic chemicals, and fatty foods? Guns, knives, and toxic chemicals can be used to "kill yourself" much faster than cigarettes. As for fattening foods, those contribute to a higher risk of heart disease, which can be fatal.

The government's role in regulating the sale of tobacco products and alcohol is simply to make sure that those products are used solely by consenting adults, and, in the case of the former, to ensure that they are not used in a manner that may be offensive and harmful to other people.

No, I think that alcoholics usually start out feeling like they're 'cool', hang out with the 'cool' crowd and make others' lives miserable. Selling to kids is illegal and it's even more illegal now to drink while driving or out in public. I don't drink also, yet if I ever wanted to while doing none of the above things then it'd be a bummer not to be able to. Enforcement is already OK and too many laws are boring that's why I don't think it should be outlawed.

as a smoker and a drinker and proud of it....no

but i do appreciate your point of view.

but drinking was banned in the 1930's and didn't work out;
if smoking were to be banned, then there would be a lot of people smoking things other than tobacco.

the government would be hard pressed to ban these items because both are big ticket economy items...
did you know the two biggest sales items after 9/11? budweiser and cigarettes....think about it

I think that you have so many people that use tobacco and alcohol that it would be next to impossible to find government officials willing to put that many votes on the line. However I like the fact that so many states are banning the use of tobacco in public places and are stiffening the laws on accidents directly affected by alcohol abuse.

I think the sale of tobacco products should be illegal. Alcohol was tried but it is way to easy to illegally manufacture. You are going to have a hard time convincing people about smoking.I asked a question about it a couple of days ago . Got almost all negative responses. Most people are non smokers. You would think we could do something about. it.

I totaly agree. Whats so gun about drinking till you barf, then not being able to remember aanything that you did when you wake up the next moring? Whats so fun about smoking? It smells it makes our teeth gross. It's sick. And do you have any idea what they put in cigarettes? Nitroglisserine (not sure how to spell that), the main ingredient in rocket fuel, Tar, Amonia, all sorts of toxic chemicals. It's sick.

Do you know why smoking and drinking cannot be completely banned? Its the highest revenue for the country in terms of economy. They can only ban smoking in certain areas and not completely. As, for drinking, if it is banned, then all entertainment joints will have to be closed and again that will affect economy interms of tourism.

well... I appreciate your concern... but as it has been proven over and over again, just because it's illegal, doesn't mean people will stop doing it.

I was in a car accident caused by a drunk that had his license revoked for multiple DUIs and had just been released from jail the day before for his latest DUI charge... that didn't keep him from getting tanked and smashing head-on into my car at 50 mph.
